After waiting multiple weeks to get back on the field, Gainesville has returned with a vengeance in making a push to reach the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class 5A state championship.

The Red Elephants rushed out to a 24-0 halftime lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 37-6 victory over the Rome Wolves on Friday night in a Class 5A state semifinal.

With the victory, Gainesville will play in the GHSA state finals finale of the state championships next week at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and will face either Roswell or Thomas County Central for the 5A title.

What was evident about this contest was Gainesville would not be denied in attempting to clinch a berth in the 5A title game.

Dwight Lewis opened up the scoring for Gainesville late in the opening quarter on a 35-yard scoring run. Lewis would find pay dirt once more early in the second quarter, this time on a 9-yard run.

The floodgates began opening up midway through the second quarter when quarterback Kharim Hughley connected on a 46-yard scoring pass to go up 21-0. Gainesville added a field goal just before halftime to take a 24-0 lead.

It was much of the same in the second half as Gainesville would add to their advantage, booking the team’s trip to a state championship under the watch of head coach Josh Niblett.
