Georgia senator weighs in on Gainesville-GHSA saga
If you believe the saga between Gainesville-Georgia High School Association (GHSA) is close to over on Thanksgiving Day, you’re badly mistaken as the clash between the two sides over the consequences of the sideline-clearing brawl that took place last week in a Class AAAAA second round contest took a new turn once again.
Georgia Senate Majority Leader Jason Anavitarte posted on his social media accounts on Facebook and X, formerly known as Twitter, statements regarding the GHSA’s decision to appeal the Hall County judge ruling on Wednesday, thus the Gainesville-Langston Hughes playoff matchup is now postponed until further notice.
Anavitarte released the following statement on Facebook regarding the GHSA’s decision to appeal the ruling made by Hall County Superior Court judge Clint Bearden in granting Gainesville a request for an injunction against the governing body of Georgia high school sports.
“It’s pretty shameful on Thanksgiving eve that the Georgia High School Association would delay a Gainesville High School playoff game bc the adults at GHSA don’t wanna do the right thing when a Superior Court judge decides the kids did nothing wrong. Instead of doing the right thing they want to double down and hurt the kids and community. That’s poor sportsmanship that should not exist in our state. The Senate will be the voice of our students if the adults won’t walk away from a fight they should have never picked.“
The GHSA had initially decided to suspend 39 Gainesville players, but decided to uphold 35 of those and to not suspend four Red Elephant players. Gainesville had decided on Tuesday to file an injunction, which led to Wednesday’s hearing in their request to allow the suspended players to play against Langston Hughes later this week.

Now with Anavitarte weighing in with comments like Wednesday’s rhetoric, it could be sooner rather than later when it comes to state intervention stepping in between Gainesville and the GHSA.
