If you thought upsets were reserved only for the regular season in high school football, you better think again.

In one of the bigger upsets of the 2025 high school football season, Orange Lutheran saved its best football for the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs as they downed No. 3 nationally ranked St. John Bosco.

The Lancers’ victory effectively ends the Braves’ chances of winning California’s Open Division state championship and a mythical national title all in one night. St. John Bosco (9-2) started off the season with nine straight wins before dropping a 36-31 loss to Mater Dei and then losing to Orange Lutheran on Friday night.

Missed extra points, turnovers and miscues that were rare during the Braves’ nine-game winning streak all reared their ugly heads in the two-game skid to end the season.

St. John Bosco couldn’t overcome the turnover bug against a upset-minded Orange Lutheran (3-9) bunch. The Braves opened up the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Corey Hinton to go up 7-0.

Orange Lutheran would tie the game up at 7-all just before halftime on a 17-yard scoring connection from 2027 quarterback Reagan Toki to fellow junior Chris Flores Jr.

Toki would give the Lancers a 14-13 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter when he connected on a 67-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nico Bland. Orange Lutheran would expand on their one-point lead when sophomore King Rich Johnson returned an interception back for a touchdown to put the Lancers up 20-13.

The Braves would add a touchdown on a 13-yard grab by Texas A&M commit Madden Williams, but the ensuing extra point attempt sailed wide, making it 20-19 with less than two minutes to go.
