High school football is back, and the second major weekend of action didn’t disappoint. But the real story is more than just who won and lost. We’re looking at the players who impressed, the coaches who stood out and the fans who are either celebrating or scratching their heads. This week, we’re highlighting the biggest winners and losers – the people and moments that made the weekend memorable.

WINNERS

California high school football: Last weekend it was the Trinity League going undefeated down in the Sunshine State, but now that’s expanding after another weekend of impressive performances.

St. John Bosco welcomed in Eastwood (Texas) and De La Salle faced off against nine-time Florida state champion Lakeland and both made Californians proud. The Braves blasted the Troopers, 66-7, and the Spartans narrowly edged out the Dreadnaughts, 10-6. When it comes to nationally-ranked Californian teams against other states, they have proven themselves at the top of the upper echelon.

Creekside exacts revenge: The Seminoles were blown out 70-0 in their loss last year at DeSoto (Texas) and vengeance was clearly on their minds all offseason.

The get back was for real Saturday and Creekside made sure to repay the favor. The team used every possession they could to score touchdown after touchdown, with no looking back, as they routed the 3-time UIL champion Eagles 70-28.

DeMatha Catholic re-enters the national stage: For all the talk that teams around the DMV and Northeast have to hear about nationally-ranked programs like Bergen Catholic (N.J.), St. Frances Academy and St. Joseph’s Prep in recent years, proud teams like DeMatha Catholic are looking to re-establish themselves among the elites.

The Stags made their statement loud and clear on Saturday night at the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic when they crushed the Hawks in a 45-17 win. DeMatha has been hovering around the national rankings, and came in at No. 20 this week in the Rivals National High School Football Composite Top 25 Rankings, but it felt like they needed something to validate that.

Armed with a win like Saturday’s, there’s no more debating DeMatha as a national powerhouse. The question now shifts to how high can they go up in the rankings as the season progresses.

LOSERS

Texas high school football: We jumped all over South Florida for its showing against out-of-state opponents and, for the most part, each loss was at least relatively close and competitive.

The same can not be said for Texas high school football teams playing against out-of-state teams. I mean, where do we start?

We can go right back to Creekside’s aforementioned 70-28 rout of DeSoto, a 42-point blowout loss for the Eagles. Or we can go out west when Eastwood took the trip out to California and faced powerhouse St. John Bosco, losing 66-7. There’s even Melissa hosting Don Bosco Prep, the first time a team from New Jersey faced a Texas squad, and the Cardinals dropped a 14-10 decision at home.

It was a disastrous week for Texas high school football.

St. Josephs Prep off to worst start in nearly 20 years: For the first time since 2007, the Hawks are off to a 0-2 start.

Is it time to sound the alarm over in Philadelphia?

St. Joseph’s Prep is reeling after blowing a 28-point lead down in South Florida followed by a nearly 30-point loss to a regional foe.

How do the Hawks turn their offensive woes around as they look to contend for another PIAA state championship? Time is ticking and obviously all eyes on Pennsylvania will be on how St. Joseph’s Prep bounces back the rest of the season.

Brophy College Prep (Ariz.): The Broncos started off the season against Basha, Arizona’s top football team, and lost 42-6. That’s an incredibly lopsided score considering Brophy entered the matchup as of the top-five teams in Arizona.

For all of the fanfare of having multiple players on the roster with NFL fathers, you’d think the Broncos would be a little closer to the Bears when it comes to the actual scoreboard side of things.

Maybe it’s just Week 1 jitters and maybe not. What became painstakingly clear was the Broncos and Bears are not on the same level. Not even close.
