If you think college football has been whacky, the high school football scene hasn’t been that far behind whatsoever. The week of Oct. 2-4 provided more surprises and upsets around the country and we’re all here for it. We’re looking at the players who impressed, the coaches who stood out and the fans who are either celebrating or scratching their heads. This week, we’re highlighting the biggest winners and losers – the people and moments that made the past weekend memorable.

WINNERS

Fans that witnessed the Montini CatholicCarmel Catholic (Ill.) game: Talk about getting your fill of high school football between two high-caliber quarterbacks. Both team’s quarterbacks, Trae Taylor for Carmel Catholic and Israel Abrams leading Montini Catholic, each passer put on a performance to remember. The two signal callers combine to throw for over 1,000 yards and it would be Abras leading Montini to a thrilling 55-54 win. Abrams finished the memorable night unofficially completing 22 of 33 passes for 568 yards and four touchdowns. In the loss for Carmel, Taylor (Nebraska commit) threw for 505 yards and five touchdowns. For the fans that attended the game, you got to witness a high school football classic.

Miami Northwestern Bulls (Fla.): Any question marks about whether Miami Northwestern can firmly put themselves back at the driver’s seat of winning Florida’s Class 3A classification without Teddy Bridgewater at the helm seem to be answered in Saturday’s 30-21 win over rival Miami Central. On the field last year before the Rockets had to forfeit the contest, Miami Central had defeated Northwestern and looked to continue their recent dominance in the series. For interim head coach Jaquatin Victrum, it was his signature win of this 2025 season and this inches the Bulls one step closer to their goals of repeating as state champions.

Corona Centennial (Calif.) head coach Matt Logan: Logan became just the 15th head coach ever in California high school football history to record 300 wins after Corona Centennial defeated Roosevelt, 62-20. For the legendary Southern California head coach, Logan’s career has been one of impressive superlative after another. The Huskies lead man has compiled an overall record of 300-65, with a 70-16 mark in the playoffs and has totaled 22 league championships along the way. What kind of ending would it be if Logan could go out on top with a Open Division title this season?

LOSERS

Sierra CanyonJunipero Serra game (Calif.): Unsure what the reasoning was behind just about everyone on the Sierra Canyon offense, besides the center, the fall over and faking cramp injuries in their 30-0 win over Junipero Serra last week. Well other to that maybe that the Trailblazers thought their opponents were purposely faking their own cramps whenever Sierra Canyon was uptempo on offense and in the redzone whenever the Cavaliers coincidentally had issues. Nonetheless, it looked from an optics perspective bad on both sides from an outsider’s POV.

DePaul Catholic (N.J.) Spartans: With all the upsets taking place around the country, one matchup that looked potentially ripe for a top-ranked team in a state to go down when DePaul Catholic hosted Don Bosco Prep. The Spartans feature one of the Northeast’s top quarterback prospects in Washington four-star commit Derek Zammit, making for what was thought to be a pretty good shot for DePaul Catholic. Instead, it would be the Ironmen taking it to the Spartans in a 47-15 rout on the road. Now we’re not expecting upsets every week, but this one certainly could’ve been closer than a 32-point romp.

Lone Peak (UT) Knights: So we had the Lone Peak Knights in our Sep. 20 edition of Winners/Losers but on the winning side of that spectrum. This time around, we’ve got the Knights on here for much different reasons as they dropped a second straight game, a 37-34 loss to Skyridge, a team fresh off a 49-14 loss to Corner Canyon. It’s been a downward spiral for Lone Peak ever since their stunning 42-21 dominant win over Corner Canyon back on Sep. 19. Are the expectations too high after winning a game like they had over the Chargers? If anything else, maybe there’s a lot of parity when it comes to Utah high school football, but for a moment, it looked like Lone Peak would be the top team when it came to the Beehive State.
