Jagger Nieves sets Utah record for rushing TDs in a single season
It’s always nice to set state single-season records and probably feels even better doing so when you can add a state championship on to it. that was the case for San Juan (UT) running back Jagger Nieves when the senior tailback capped a historic season in last week’s Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) Class 2A state championship game against South Summit.
The Broncos went on to dominate the Wildcats in a 57-10 rout, winning their fifth straight state title in a row, but in the process, Nieves was able to set a Utah state record for rushing touchdowns. The senior running back scored four times, resetting the state record now at 40 rushing touchdowns for the season.
“Breaking the record means a lot. My line definitely helped, and those guys are dogs. It definitely means a lot and this what I always wanted to do,” Nieves said to the Deseret News.
Nieves had a season to remember in being able to cap it with the numbers he put up his senior year. The San Juan running back rushed for 2,088 yards on 219 touches and scored 40 touchdowns, a new UHSAA record. The senior also added 731 yards and seven touchdowns receiving, totaling 48 touchdowns in all.

“You don’t get kids like Jagger in small towns. I can say this with 100% confidence; Jagger has been one of the hardest working guys I’ve ever coached in the world. He leads by example, and everything that he’s got, he’s definitely earned,” San Juan head coach Barkley Christensen said to the Deseret News about Nieves and the state record.
