Joe Mauer, Larry Fitzgerald Jr., Frank Ragnow headline Minnesota high school football all-quarter century team

SI.com’s Jack Butler compiled a Minnesota high school football All-Quarter-Century Team before the 2025 season starts. There are some familiar names on the list of exceptional athletes who played from 2000 to 2024, including a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
Larry Fitzgerald Jr. is one of Butler’s choices for wide receiver. Before playing for the Pittsburgh Panthers, he represented Richfield’s Academy of Holy Angels and became a two-time First-Team All-State member.
Fitzgerald spent his entire 16-season NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals, earning 11 Pro Bowl and three All-Pro selections. The NFL 2010s All-Decade Team member also led the league in receptions and receiving touchdowns twice.
By his final season, he had the second-most receiving yards of all time behind Jerry Rice. He also holds the record for most receptions (30) and touchdown catches (7) in a postseason. Likewise, his three playoff games with at least 150 receiving yards is also an NFL record.
Meanwhile, Frank Ragnow graces this Minnesota high school football list as one of the five offensive linemen. He played for Chanhassen, wherein he became an Army All-American and an Associated Press All-State Team member.
After high school, he attended Arkansas and earned two First-Team All-American honors. The Detroit Lions selected him in the first round (20th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft and became a three-time All-Pro center. Unfortunately, the four-time Pro Bowler retired as a player in June 2025 at age 29, ending his stint with the Lions after seven seasons.

Baseball legend included in this Minnesota high school football list
Finally, Butler selected Joe Mauer as the quarterback of the Minnesota high school football All-Quarter-Century list. By his senior year at Cretin-Derham Hall High School, he became the only athlete to become the USA Today High School Player of the Year in football and baseball.
Mauer helped his high school win the 1999 state championship. The following year, he threw for 3,022 yards and 41 touchdowns. He committed to play football for Florida State. However, Minnesota Twins selected him first overall in the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft.
While playing for his hometown team, Mauer became a six-time All-Star, a five-time Silver Slugger winner, a three-time Gold Glove awardee, and the 2009 American League Most Valuable Player. He retired in 2018 after 14 MLB seasons and became a Hall of Fame inductee in 2024.
Other notable names in the Minnesota high school football All-Quarter-Century Team include JC Hassenauer (East Ridge), Beau Allen (Minnetonka), James Laurinaitis (Wayzata), Amani Hooker (Park Center), and Marion Barber III (Wayzata).
