Joey Montalvo breaks Connecticut state record for receiving yards in a career

East Catholic senior wide receiver Joey Montalvo entered the 2025 Connecticut high school football season with 2,967 yards, which was good for fifth all-time in the state record books for a career.
Now, the Eagles’ pass catcher owns the overall record all by himself.
In East Catholic’s 31-24 loss to Plainville, Montalvo broke the state record previously held by the late Aaron Hernandez, who at Bristol Central amassed 3,677 yards. Montalvo broke the record when he hauled in a 60-yard touchdown pass from East Catholic quarterback Geovanni Ramos.
“I’m just really at a loss of words to be honest,” Montalvo said to WFSB’s Dan Booth after the game. “I’m thankful for being able to shine. It’s special. It’s great I got to do it on senior night. I didn’t think of (the record) until this year when coach told me how close I was.”
Among the others Montalvo passed along the way to taking the state record was Nico Ragaini (Notre Dame-West Haven) with 3,345 yards; Thomas Milone (Masuk) with 3,224; and Marcus Cooper (Bloomfield) with 3024 yards.

“When he’s on the field, the stuff he does, whether it’s running back, quarterback, receiver, returner, he’s making a difference on every single play,” East Catholic coach Tommy Seaver said via a Hartford Courant report back in late September. “If he’s on the field, you know he’s out there.
“We were watching film against Bristol Eastern – he got a punt and he started to return it, maybe at the 40-yard line, and there’s kids on our sidelines thinking it’s a touchdown already. Everyone knows when he gets the ball, that he can score.”
