Kentucky high school football game postponed by nationwide government shutdown

A pair of Kentucky high school football teams will be sitting on the sideline this weekend due to the federal government shutdown.
Earlier this week, Fort Campbell‘s administration posted that the school’s upcoming game versus Trigg County would not be able to played “In the event of a lapse in appropriations after September 30, 2025, leading to a ‘government shutdown.”
Fort Campbell, which is a DoDEA school, has remained open for normal operations, but extracurricular activities — including sports practices and games — are put on hold.
The game has been postponed to October 30 now, despite a plea from Kentucky senator Mitch McConnell. The Republican sent a letter to the Department of Defense asking for an exemption for the school.
“Student dependents of American service-members have been left in the lurch and cannot participate in interscholastic athletics,” McConnell wrote in the letter. “Not only does this threaten the standing of high school teams relative to their non-DoD peers, it also risks disrupting individual student-athletes’ aspirations of competing at the college level, as the fall season is a major athletic recruiting opportunity for institutions of higher education.
… We should not force the children of our service-members to pay the price for Washington’s failure to appropriate funds on time.”
Fort Campbell has three more upcoming games before the rescheduled matchup with Trigg County, but those will also go unplayed until the government resumes operations.

Kentucky not the only state dealing with game issues
DoDEA schools across the country are facing similar problems, including Lejeune (N.C.), which resides on Camp Lejeune and is the only Department of Defense high school in the state.
Among the sports programs affected at the school are the undefeated boys soccer team, football, cross country, girls tennis and volleyball.
Lejeune’s football team is currently 0-6 on the season, with its latest game being a 48-0 loss to Northside on Sep. 30.
