Louisiana High School Football Rankings: Top 25 teams – Oct. 20

Late October is upon us, and that means the Louisiana high school football playoffs aren’t far away.
For most teams around the state, only three regular season games remain for them to position themselves to make a deep postseason run. And if they aren’t already in the race for one of those coveted spots, time is running out quickly. This past week saw plenty of movement in the state rankings, though Edna Karr and Ruston remain as the state’s top two teams heading into Week 8.
A host of big matchups are on top this weekend, which will have a big effect on seeding here in a few weeks. Below is a look at the state’s top 25 teams:
1. Edna Karr Cougars (7-0)
You’d be hard pressed to argue that any team in the state has been tested more with tough opponents thus far, but Edna Karr continues to roll at 7-0 with only a couple more chances for other teams to knock them off. A Jesuit team that came into last weekend ranked among the top 15 in the state was held scoreless as the Cougars coasted to a 41-0 victory. Now only three games stand between Karr and an undefeated regular season.
2. Ruston Bearcats (6-1)
Ruston squeaked out a 7-point win over Ouachita Parish last weekend, and the schedule didn’t do them any favors with Neville awaiting this weekend. But despite giving up a season-high 37 points, the Bearcats escaped with a 41-37 win to retain their hold on the No. 2 ranking. They trailed by double-digits at multiple points, but ultimately their offense was too much for the Tigers to overcome.
3. St. Augustine Purple Knights (6-1)
The Purple Knights are back in the top-3 this week, moving up one spot after a dominant 26-3 win over a top-10 Archbishop Rummel squad. Vashaun Coulon scored each of the team’s four touchdowns and the St. Augustine defense forced three turnovers, as they exacted revenge for last year’s loss and spoiled homecoming for the rival Raiders.
4. John Curtis Patriots (6-0)
In the midst of its second of five games against top-20 teams to close the season, the Patriots passed another test by beating Brother Martin 38-24. Senior running back Jacobi Boudreaux led the way with three touchdowns, and sophomore quarterback London Padgett III accounted for two more. Meanwhile, the Curtis defense forced three turnovers to stifle what had been a very potent Brother Martin offense.
5. Alexandria Trojans (6-1)
The Trojans suffered their first loss of the year last week to West Monroe, but they got back on the horse quickly. They welcomed a Pineville squad to town looking to pull off an upset, but that wasn’t in the cards. Alexandria rolled to a 49-3 victory, setting up a huge matchup against No. 2 Ruston this coming weekend.
