After a week loaded with ranked matchups across the state, the latest top-25 rankings for Louisiana high school football are out.

Top-ranked Edna Karr maintained its stranglehold on the No. 1 ranking, blowing out a previously unbeaten No. 5 St. Augustine squad. A few others ranked in last week’s top 10 fell, but there still wasn’t wholesale change in the rankings like you might expect. Five of the state’s top six teams remain undefeated as we hit the halfway point of the regular season, but that will change in the coming weeks with some big matchups on tap.

Below are the full top 25 rankings:

1. Edna Karr Cougars (5-0)

Karr has faced a handful of early-season tests, beginning week Archbishop Shaw in Week 1. But none were expected to be bigger than Friday night’s game on the road against No. 5 St. Augustine. The two New Orleans-area perennial powers feature tons of future college prospects on their rosters, and it was anticipated to be one of the best games of the year. The Cougars had other ideas. In front of a raucous road crowd, quarterback Josh Johnson passed for 341 yards and accounted for five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) to lead Karr to a 42-21 victory.

2. Ruston Bearcats (4-1)

Ruston’s run of victories over out-of-state opponents ended Friday night in a surprising 28-12 loss to Stephenville (Texas). The Massey Ratings projected the Bearcats as 7-point favorites, but the Yellowjackets defense was stifling in a 28-12 victory. They maintained their No. 2 ranking though, and will now face No. 10 Ouachita Parish, No. 17 Neville and No. 3 Alexandria in a tough stretch over the next three weeks.

3. Alexandria Trojans (6-0)

It’s hard to argue that any team has been more dominant so far this season around the state than Alexandria. The Trojans haven’t exactly faced a murderer’s row of opponents, but they’ve handled their business each week to move to 6-0. The latest was a 57-0 drubbing of Many on Friday night in a game that could’ve been even more of a blowout. Now their attention turns to a huge showdown this weekend when No. 14 West Monroe comes to town for only their second ranked matchup of the year.

4. John Curtis Patriots (4-0)

John Curtis has been living on the edge over the past few weeks, but that’s what happens when you’re playing ranked in-state opponents. After sneaking past Archbishop Rummel two weekends ago, they pulled out a 33-29 victory over Warren Easton on Thursday night. The Patriots relied heavily on a dominant rushing attack, racking up 413 yards on 39 attempts. Easton made a late comeback to take a 29-26 lead with 4:22 remaining, but John Curtis marched down the field to score one last time and keep their record unblemished.

5. St. Augustine Purple Knights (4-1)

After four wins to start the season, St. Augustine ran into a buzzsaw on Friday night against Edna Karr. The Purple Knights simply couldn’t slow down Cougars quarterback Josh Johnson, who accounted for five touchdowns. They won’t have long to lick their wounds, though. No. 12 Jesuit comes to town this weekend before a huge top-10 showdown against Archbishop Rummel the following week.
