Kennebunk's Brady Stone (1) scored the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter of Friday's Class B South championship game against Deering.

The Maine high school football season heads into the state semifinal round as the Maine Principal’s Association (MPA) championships take place next weekend.

Top-ranked Thornton Academy remains the No. 1 team in the state, after defeating South Portland, 35-12, in the Class A playoffs. Who else should be in the Top 25 Maine high school football rankings just before the postseason takes off out of the Pine Tree State this week?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Maine high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Nov. 10.

1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans

The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans (8-1) finished with a 10-3 record last season, with two of their three losses were against the Portland Bulldogs. The Trojans have looked they are clicking on all cylinders in a recent 42-21 drubbing of No. 2 Bonny Eagle and followed it up with wins over Noble and South Portland, respectively.

The Trojans kicked off the season with a dominating 44-0 victory over Scarborough, but dropped their only game of the season in a 26-14 loss to Bedford (New Hampshire). Thornton Academy looks to close out the regular season out strong when they face No. 4 ranked Noble.

Thornton Academy takes on No. 2 ranked Bonny Eagle Class A state semifinals this week.

2. Bonny Eagle Scots

Bonny Eagle (9-1) has a chance to return to the state championship game for the first time since 2019 when they won it all, defeating Thornton Academy, the very team they have to get through in this week’s Class A state semifinals in order to reach the final.

The Scots are so back after finishing below .500 last fall and have been the bounce back team of the year in Maine. That has been backed up with the seven straight victories, which included wins over WindhamNobleOxford Hills Comprehensive and most notably Portland in the last several weeks before the first loss to Thornton Academy.

In 2024, the Scots had more wins than losses, with their campaign ending in a defeat to Noble in the Maine high school football Class A state quarterfinals. It’s been a half dozen years since Bonny Eagle last won a state title and they’re off to a good start in attempting to snap the streak.

Quarterback Colin Moran has been playing well behind center, throwing for 1,184 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.

3. Portland Bulldogs

The Portland Bulldogs (8-2) had lost two straight games after a 34-7 loss to No. 2 Bonny Eagle and then falling to Thornton Academy, the very team they defeated for the Class A title last fall, in a 36-0 loss a few weeks ago. Bulldogs notched a fourth consecutive win when they defeated Deering, 35-14, last week.

Could Portland have enough to go back-to-back this season? The Bulldogs feature on offense arguably one of the top players in the state in Maine commit Cordell Jones (2,027 all-purpose yards, 25 total touchdowns), who accounted for 1,216 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns offensively last fall and has transitioned more to the quarterback position for the Bulldogs.

Portland faces Bangor in the Class A state semifinals with a chance to return to the state championship.

4. Cony Rams

Has there been a more dominant team over the last few weeks than the undefeated Cony Rams (9-0)?

The Rams have been one of Maine’s highest scoring teams offensively, averaging 51.1 points per game. It has been especially evident the team’s dominance over the course of the last few weeks, with Cony beating their last four opponents by a combined 259-31.

Cony’s is in the state semifinal round of the Class B playoffs and will take on Fryeburg Academy this week with a chance to advance to the state championship on Nov. 22.

5. Kennebunk Rams

Boasting a 9-1 record after the 2024 regular season play, the Kennebunk Rams looked like a good bet heading into last season’s Maine high school football Class B state championship game to win it all. The Rams were not able to seal the deal in a 26-13 loss to Falmouth.

Kennebunk (8-1) has been able to exact revenge in the opening week of the season when they defeated Falmouth at home in a 14-10 victory and in the playoffs by knocking the Navigators out, 21-20. The Rams head into the Class B state semifinals this week when they take on No. 9 ranked Westbrook (8-1).
