The Maine high school football season heads into the state title round as the Maine Principal’s Association (MPA) championships take place this weekend at Portland High School’s Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Top-ranked Thornton Academy remains the No. 1 team in the state after defeating Bonny Eagle, 40-28, in the Class A state semifinals. Who else should be in the Top 25 Maine high school football rankings just before the postseason takes off out of the Pine Tree State this week?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Maine high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Nov. 17.

1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans

The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans (9-1) finished with a 10-3 record last season, with two of their three losses were against the Portland Bulldogs. The Trojans are clicking on all cylinders after last week’s 40-28 win over No. 2 Bonny Eagle and now will get a chance for redemption against Portland on Saturday in the MPA Class A state championship.

The Trojans kicked off the season with a dominating 44-0 victory over Scarborough, but dropped their only game of the season in a 26-14 loss to Bedford (New Hampshire). Thornton Academy has won eight straight games en route to the state title tilt.

2. Bonny Eagle Scots

Bonny Eagle (9-2) had themselves a chance to return to the state championship game for the first time since 2019 when they won it all, but ended up coming short in a 40-28 loss to Thornton Academy.

The Scots had a strong 2025 season after finishing below .500 last fall and have been the bounce back team of the year in Maine. That has been backed up with the seven straight victories, which included wins over WindhamNobleOxford Hills Comprehensive and most notably Portland in the last several weeks before the first loss to Thornton Academy.

In 2024, the Scots had more wins than losses, with their campaign ending in a defeat to Noble in the Maine high school football Class A state quarterfinals. It’s been a half dozen years since Bonny Eagle last won a state title and have nothing to be ashamed of with the kind of season they just had.

Quarterback Colin Moran has been playing well behind center, throwing for 1,268 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.

3. Portland Bulldogs

The Portland Bulldogs (9-2) had lost two straight games after a 34-7 loss to No. 2 Bonny Eagle and then falling to Thornton Academy, the very team they defeated for the Class A title last fall, in a 36-0 loss a few weeks ago. Bulldogs notched a fifth consecutive win when they defeated Bangor, 30-22, in last week’s Class A state semifinal.

Could Portland have enough to go back-to-back this season? The Bulldogs feature on offense arguably one of the top players in the state in Maine commit Cordell Jones (2,232 all-purpose yards, 29 total touchdowns), who accounted for 1,216 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns offensively last fall and has transitioned more to the quarterback position for the Bulldogs.

This Saturday, Portland faces Thornton Academy in the Class A state championship with a chance to repeat at home.

4. Cony Rams

Has there been a more dominant team over the last few weeks than the undefeated Cony Rams (10-0)?

The Rams have been one of Maine’s highest scoring teams offensively, averaging 50 points per game. It has been especially evident the team’s dominance over the course of the last few weeks, with Cony beating their last five opponents by a combined 309-38.

Cony has advanced to the state championship round of the Class B playoffs and will take on Westbrook (9-1) on Nov. 22.

5. Noble Knights

Noble (7-3) return to inside of the Top 5 of the rankings despite seeing their postseason end back on Nov. 7 at the hands of No. 2 ranked Bonny Eagle. Two out of the Knights’ three losses came against the Scots this season.

The Knights had been on a three-game winning streak to start the season, before losing their first game of 2025 to Bonny Eagle. Noble ended up bouncing back at home when they defeated Marshwood, 35-27.
