Maine High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Nov. 3

The Maine high school football season just completed the regular season as the Maine Principal’s Association (MPA) playoffs officially kick off this week.

Top-ranked Thornton Academy remains the No. 1 team in the state, after defeating a solid Noble squad, 27-14. Who else should be in the Top 25 Maine high school football rankings just before the postseason takes off out of the Pine Tree State this week?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Maine high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Nov. 3.

1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans

The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans (7-1) finished with a 10-3 record last season, with two of their three losses were against the Portland Bulldogs. The Trojans looked like they were clicking on all cylinders in a recent 42-21 drubbing of No. 2 Bonny Eagle and followed it up with a 27-14 win over No. 5 Noble.

The Trojans kicked off the season with a dominating 44-0 victory over Scarborough, but dropped their only game of the season in a 26-14 loss to Bedford (New Hampshire). Thornton Academy looks to close out the regular season out strong when they face No. 4 ranked Noble.

2. Bonny Eagle Scots

Bonny Eagle (8-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 44-6 rout of Scarborough last week.

The Scots are so back after finishing below .500 last fall and have been the bounce back team of the year in Maine. That has been backed up with the seven straight victories, which included wins over Windham, Noble, Oxford Hills Comprehensive and most notably Portland in the last several weeks before the first loss to Thornton Academy.

In 2024, the Scots had more wins than losses, with their campaign ending in a defeat to Noble in the Maine high school football Class A state quarterfinals. It’s been a half dozen years since Bonny Eagle last won a state title and they’re off to a good start in attempting to snap the streak.

Quarterback Colin Moran has been playing well behind center, throwing for 827 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. Bonny Eagle opens the Class A playoffs against No. 5 Noble this week.

3. Portland Bulldogs

The Portland Bulldogs (7-2) had lost two straight games after a 34-7 loss to No. 2 Bonny Eagle and then falling to Thornton Academy, the very team they defeated for the Class A title last fall, in a 36-0 loss a few weeks ago. Bulldogs notched a third consecutive win when they defeated South Portland, 27-14.

The Bulldogs feature on offense arguably one of the top players in the state in Maine commit Cordell Jones (1,772 all-purpose yards, 22 total touchdowns), who accounted for 1,216 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns offensively last fall and has transitioned more to the quarterback position for the Bulldogs. 

Portland opens up the Class A postseason and their title defense versus Deering.

4. Cony Rams

Has there been a more dominant team over the last few weeks than the undefeated Cony Rams (8-0)?

The Rams have been one of Maine’s highest scoring teams offensively, averaging 48.3 points per game. It has been especially evident the team’s dominance over the course of the last few weeks, with Cony beating their last four opponents by a combined 208-31.

Cony’s regular season ended last week in a 54-10 thrashing of Gardiner Area and takes on Messalonskee in the second round of the Class B playoffs.

5. Noble Knights

Noble (7-2) dropped their second game of the season when they fell in a 27-14 decision against No. 1 ranked Thornton Academy last week.

The Knights had been on a three-game winning streak to start the season, before losing their first game of 2025 to Bonny Eagle. Noble ended up bouncing back at home when they defeated Marshwood, 35-27.

The Knights will begin the Class A postseason with a first round matchup against No. 2 ranked Bonny Eagle.
