The Maryland high school boys basketball 2025-26 season is right around the corner and we begin to roll out our preseason rankings out of the DMV region.

Coming away as the No. 1 team in our first Maryland Top 25 preseason rankings are the DeMatha Catholic Stags, which are coming off a 23-7 season and fell at the end of the 2024-25 campaign to The Bullis School, who checks in at No. 2. The Stags and Bulldogs are a couple of the state’s best, but who else should we watch for out of Maryland when it comes to the state’s top high school boys basketball teams?

We dive into the Maryland hoops scene as high school football season is still in full gear as we take an early peek at who are the top teams from around the state.

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here’s a way-too-early look at the top 25 teams in the country according to the Massey Ratings, which ranks teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory, as of Nov. 7.

1. DeMatha Catholic Stags

Checking in as the top team out of Maryland are the DeMatha Catholic Stags, which finished 23-7 last year playing many of the best squads in the DMV area. The Stags bring back their top scorer from a year ago in senior three-star point guard Ashton Meeks, who averaged 18.7 points per game. Among others to watch out for at DeMatha Catholic will be 2027 forward Daniel Abass, who averaged 4.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 2024-25. With the talent coming back, the Stags are easily one of the state’s best this fall.

2. The Bullis School Bulldogs

Like DeMatha Catholic above them, The Bullis School also finished 23-7 last season and defeated the Stags to close out 2024-25, 69-54. The Bulldogs’ losses from last season came against some of the nation’s top teams, including Archbishop Stepanic (N.Y.), Miami Columbus (Fla.) and Link Academy (MO), respectively. This fall/winter schedule is just as difficult, but The Bullis School features one of the top 2028 shooting guards in four-star Xavier Skipworth.

3. St. Frances Academy Panthers

Though St. Frances Academy‘s football team doesn’t play within Maryland’s MIAA, their boys basketball team does and the Panthers were able to go all the way to the Class A state championship before falling to Our Lady Of Mount Carmel, 55-50. The Panthers will go into the season without one of their better players from the 2024-25 season in point guard Jasiah Cannady, who transferred to Mt. Zion Prep during the off-season. Despite the loss of Cannady, the Panthers should remain in contention for the Class A title this winter.

4. Bishop McNamara Mustangs

When it comes to returning talent, there’s little argument that Bishop McNamara might have the most in taking a closer look at their roster. The Mustangs lost their first nine games a season ago before finishing the rest of the way with a 14-6 record, 14-15 overall. One of the team’s top returning players is senior four-star shooting guard Qayden Samuels, who participated in the USA Basketball Junior National Team minicamp over the summer. Among other players to watch for this winter at Bishop McNamara is shooting guard Prince-Alexander Moody (Indiana commit), junior shooting guard Kirby Duran and junior 7-footer Jahmai Drayton.

5. Georgetown Preparatory School Hoyas

Rounding out the Top 5 of the Maryland high school boys basketball rankings are the Georgetown Preparatory School Hoyas, which went 16-14 a year ago. The Little Hoyas graduated several key senior starters, but do return senior 7-foot center Sinan Huan, who follows a long line of talented big men to come from the school. Georgetown Prep figures to be in the conversation as one of Maryland’s best as they competed well against teams like The Bullis School and St. John’s (D.C.), respectively, last year.
