Maryland High School Football Top 25 Rankings - Aug. 27

Some Maryland high school football teams took to the field last week, while others had to wait another few days to do so this Friday night.
Topping our Massey Rankings Maryland Top 25 High School Football Rankings are the No. 2 nationally ranked St. Frances Academy Panthers, who are coming off a 42-13 thrashing of Florida power Chaminade-Madonna. Who else made the cut out of the Old Line State?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest Maryland Top 25 high school football rankings, according to Massey.
1. St. Frances Academy Panthers
Was there ever any question after Saturday night’s performance if the Panthers were in fact the top team in Maryland?
For those with any doubts, they were quickly silenced when St. Frances Academy rolled to an impressive 42-13 rout of 9-time Florida state champion Chaminade-Madonna. The Panthers avenged a 2023 loss to the Lions down at the Broward County Classic High School Football Showcase.
On full display for those watching the nationally televised matchup was the Panthers’ stout defense along with their powerful rushing attack, led by Virginia commitment Jae’Oyn Williams.
With the blowout victory over Chaminade-Madonna brings expectations and those of a mythical national championship come to mind as the season moves along. The Panthers have a bye week before they travel out west to take on the nationally ranked St. John Bosco Braves.
2. DeMatha Catholic Stags
DeMatha Catholic takes over the second spot after Archbishop Spalding fell on the road in Indiana against Brownsburg, 36-23. The Stags lost to the Cavaliers in the regular season opener last year and then went on a ten-game winning streak.
The win streak to then all the way to the top, defeating Good Counsel to claim the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Capital Division championship last season.
Coming off winning the WCAC title, DeMatha Catholic will open up the 2025 season playing in the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic in Wilmington Delaware against No. 21 ranked St. Joseph’s Prep School, which dropped their opener, a 31-28 loss to American Heritage (Fla.).
DeMatha Catholic boasts one of the top wide receiving corps in the DMV, featuring wideouts Joshua Parker, Chace Irvin and Evan Jones, respectively.
3. Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers
Dropping down one spot after opening up the season with a 36-23 loss to Brownsburg of Indiana was the Cavaliers as they fell on the road, 36-23.
Archbishop Spalding’s defense had a tough time slowing down Brownsburg’s offense, led by Bulldogs’ quarterback Oscar Frye, who threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
Life after Malik Washington, who is now at the University of Maryland, wasn’t going to be easy and neither is the 2025 slate of games the Cavaliers have lined up. Archbishop Spalding will look to bounce back this week when they welcome into town Archbishop Hoban of Ohio.

4. Good Counsel Falcons
Good Counsel kicks off their 2025 season this week as they go up against Florida’s Columbus Explorers, who are coming off a weather-shortened 14-7 win over Miami Southridge.
Four-star edge rusher Anthony Sweeney, four-star offensive lineman Jaiden Lindsay, and three-star defensive lineman David Jackson (North Carolina) will lead the Falcons’ front sevenbe the difference-makers for the fourth-best Maryland high school football team.
The Falcons will be playing one of the toughest schedules in the DMV as they will face teams like DeMatha Catholic, DePaul Catholic (N.J.), Middletown (Del.) and St. Joseph’s Prep School (Pa.).
5. McDonogh School Eagles
McDonogh School (1-0) opened up the 2025 season in dominating fashion as they routed Riverdale Baptist, 48-6.
The Eagles are looking to improve from their 7-3 mark in 2023 and will have a chance to go 2-0 Friday afternoon when they take on St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) in the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic.
McDonogh features one of the top defensive units in all of Maryland, bringing back multiple Power 4 prospects. Leading the way is four-star lineman Joseph Buchanan and four-star linebacker Nick Abrams (Georgia) to anchor the defense.
