Maryland high school football teams came out in full force last week and displayed why the DMV is one of the best regions for high school football on the East Coast.

Continuing to head our Massey Rankings Maryland Top 25 High School Football Rankings are the No. 2 nationally ranked St. Frances Academy Panthers, who will travel out to California this week to take on St. John Bosco. Who else made the cut out of the Old Line State?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Maryland high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey.

1. St. Frances Academy Panthers

Was there ever any question after the Panthers’ performance at the Broward County Classic if they were in fact the top team in Maryland?

For those with any doubts, they were quickly silenced when St. Frances Academy rolled to an impressive 42-13 rout of 9-time Florida state champion Chaminade-Madonna a week and a half ago. The Panthers avenged a 2023 loss to the Lions down at the Broward County Classic High School Football Showcase.

On full display for those watching the nationally televised matchup was the Panthers’ stout defense along with their powerful rushing attack, led by Virginia commitment Jae’Oyn Williams.

With the blowout victory over Chaminade-Madonna brings expectations and those of a mythical national championship come to mind as the season moves along. The Panthers are coming off a bye week as they travel out west to take on the nationally ranked St. John Bosco Braves this Friday night in a national showdown.

2. DeMatha Catholic Stags

DeMatha Catholic holds down the second spot after they put an exclamation point on why they should be considered amongst the nationally ranked clubs, cruising to a 45-17 beatdown of previously ranked St. Joseph’s Prep School (Pa.) this past Saturday night at the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic in Wilmington, Delaware.

Coming off winning the WCAC title, DeMatha Catholic will open up the 2025 season playing in the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic in Wilmington Delaware against No. 21 ranked St. Joseph’s Prep School, which dropped their opener, a 31-28 loss to American Heritage (Fla.).

DeMatha Catholic boasts one of the top wide receiving corps in the DMV, featuring wideouts Joshua ParkerChace Irvin and Evan Jones, respectively. Quarterback Tristan Sabb proved himself against a stout Hawks’ defense along with running back Elijah Lee.

3. Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers

After opening up the season with a 36-23 loss to Brownsburg of Indiana, the Cavaliers felt like they had something to prove when they returned home to face Archbishop Hoban of Ohio.

Archbishop Spalding’s offense got a lift from freshman quarterback Brian Snowden Jr., who threw for five touchdowns and ran in another in a 58-28 rout of Archbishop Hoban this past Saturday.

Life after Malik Washington, who is now at the University of Maryland, wasn’t going to be easy and neither is the 2025 slate of games the Cavaliers have lined up. Archbishop Spalding will look to win consecutive games this week when they take on The Hun School (N.J.), one of the top prep programs in the Northeast.

4. Good Counsel Falcons

Good Counsel kicked off their 2025 campaign last week as they defeated Florida’s Columbus Explorers, 14-7, solidifying themselves among the state’s best with the victory.

Four-star edge rusher Anthony Sweeney, four-star offensive lineman Jaiden Lindsay, and three-star defensive lineman David Jackson (North Carolina) will lead the Falcons’ front sevenbe the difference-makers for the fourth-best Maryland high school football team.

The Falcons will be playing one of the toughest regular season schedules in the DMV as they will face powerhouse teams like DeMatha Catholic, DePaul Catholic (N.J.), Middletown (Del.) and St. Joseph’s Prep School (Pa.), respectively.

5. McDonogh School Eagles


McDonogh School (2-0) continued their winning ways to start the season when they defeated a solid St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) club out of Long Island in a 38-21 decision at the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Eagles are looking to improve from their 7-3 mark in 2023 and showed plenty of promise at the classic behind the play off their offense, led by the hard running of tailback Mason Graham and quarterback Braeden Plazzo.

McDonogh features one of the top defensive units in all of Maryland, bringing back multiple Power 4 prospects. Leading the way is four-star lineman Joseph Buchanan and four-star linebacker Nick Abrams (Georgia) to anchor the defense.
