Massachusetts Top 25

The Massachusetts high school football campaign has entered the MIAA postseason, with the NEPSAC bowl games portion now wrapped up as the playoffs rage on in the Old Colony State.

Taking the top spot once again is Tabor Academy after they defeated Buckingham Browne & Nichols School, 42-21, in the John Papas Bowl. The Seawolves are just ahead of St. John’s Preparatory School, which remains firm in the second spot this week. Which other teams join the latest Massachusetts high school football Top 25 rankings?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Massachusetts high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Nov. 17.

1. Tabor Academy Seawolves

The Tabor Academy Seawolves (9-0) capped their Massachusetts high school football season with a 42-21 victory over  Buckingham Browne & Nichols School this past Saturday in the John Papas Bowl.

feature one of the Massachusetts’ most talented rosters bar none. The Seawolves have a bevy of Division I talent, which includes players like junior quarterback Peter Bourque (Michigan commit), Amahn Williams (UCF commit) and a pair of UCLA defensive linemen commitments in Carter Gooden and Marcus Almada, respectively.

Tabor Academy was impressive in their regular season opener, a 37-6 rout of The Williston Northampton School, following it up with a dominating outing over The Governors Academy in a 46-6 rout and then taking care of business against Milton Academy in a 51-26 win and St. Sebastian’s School, 39-21.

2. St. John’s Preparatory School Eagles

The St. John’s Preparatory School Eagles (10-0) stay pat in the second spot of the rankings as there’s plenty to like about this team, especially after an impressive victory over No. 3 ranked Catholic Memorial, 43-28, just a few weeks ago. St. John’s boasts having one of the best sophomore quarterbacks in the country in Christopher Vargas, who is coming off a solid freshman campaign. Vargas against the Knights ended up throwing four touchdowns on 20 of 29 completions.

The Eagles needed a strong offensive performance to over a big night by Leominster quarterback Osiris Lopez, who is a Coastal Carolina commit, to pull off a 48-32 win in the second round of the MIAA Division I playoffs. Next up is the state semis as St. John’s will take on Central Catholic for a chance to go to the Division I Super Bowl.

Can’t forget the Thanksgiving morning match with Xaverian Brothers, the very team they could end up facing in a state championship matchup.

3. Catholic Memorial Knights

Catholic Memorial (6-2) are once again loaded with Power 4 talent, with a handful that’ll be making the short trip over to Boston College after their time with the Knights. Among the myriad of Boston College commitments are 2026 three-star linemen Marcelino AntunesMac Fitzgerald, 2027 safety Jackson Tucker and 2028 athlete Ramar Thomas.

The Knights are always in the mix when it comes to MIAA’s Division 2 classification and their most impressive victory of the season was a 56-32 romp over St. Francis (N.Y.) several weeks ago. The Knights dropped their first game of the season a few weeks ago against Xaverian Brothers with New England Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye in attendance, 25-22.

Catholic Memorial came out firing in the second round of the MIAA Division II playoffs and cruised last week in a 47-0 win over Wellesley. Now they’ll take on Winchester (10-0) in a Division II state semifinal.

4. King Phillip Regional Warriors

King Philip Reg (10-0) moved down one spot in the latest Massachusetts high school football rankings after a 42-12 rout of Mansfield (5-4) in the second round of the MIAA Division III playoffs.

The Warriors are coming off another strong season in the MIAA’s Division II classification, in which they went 12-1 and reached the state championship game, losing to Catholic Memorial. With an advantageous schedule that mimics last year’s, the road back to the title game looks clear once again for the Warriors.

King Phillip now goes into Round 3 of the Division III postseason up against Malden Catholic for a chance to go to the Super Bowl.

5. Springfield Central Golden Eagles

The Springfield Central Golden Eagles (8-1) have been an interesting team through the first eight games of the Massachusetts high school football season, as this group could easily be undefeated after losing their opener by one point to St. John’s Preparatory School, 36-35.

Since then, Springfield Central has bounced back with eight straight quality victories, with the latest victory coming being a 49-14 rout of Lowell last week. The Golden Eagles are easily one of the hottest teams heading into the Massachusetts state playoffs.

Springfield Central will take on No. 6 Xaverian Brothers in the MIAA Division I state semifinals this week.
