The Massachusetts high school football campaign has entered Thanksgiving week, with many teams playing games on either Wednesday evening or Thursday morning before people gather for the traditional lunch or dinner with families.
There’s a change at the top once again as St. John’s Preparatory School, which was in the second spot last week, jumped over Tabor Academy, for the top spot in this week’s set of rankings. Which other teams join the latest Massachusetts high school football Top 25 rankings?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest Massachusetts high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Nov. 24.
1. St. John’s Preparatory School Eagles
The St. John’s Preparatory School Eagles (11-0) remained sizzling hot offensively as they cruised to a 48-7 thrashing of Central Catholic to reach the MIAA Division I Super Bowl game. St. John’s boasts having one of the best sophomore quarterbacks in the country in Christopher Vargas, who is coming off a solid freshman campaign. Vargas against the Catholic Memorial Knights this season ended up throwing four touchdowns on 20 of 29 completions.
The Eagles needed a strong offensive performance to overcome a big night by Leominster quarterback Osiris Lopez, who is a Coastal Carolina commit, to pull off a 48-32 win in the second round of the MIAA Division I playoffs.
Now the matchup everyone was hoping to see will happen in back-to-back weeks when St. John’s will take on Xaverian Brothers this week and the following. Can’t forget the Thanksgiving morning match with Xaverian Brothers, the very team they will face in the Division I state championship.
2. Tabor Academy Seawolves
The Tabor Academy Seawolves (9-0) capped their Massachusetts high school football season with a 42-21 victory over Buckingham Browne & Nichols School a week and a half ago in the John Papas Bowl.
feature one of the Massachusetts’ most talented rosters bar none. The Seawolves have a bevy of Division I talent, which includes players like junior quarterback Peter Bourque (Michigan commit), Amahn Williams (UCF commit) and a pair of UCLA defensive linemen commitments in Carter Gooden and Marcus Almada, respectively.
Tabor Academy was impressive in their regular season opener, a 37-6 rout of The Williston Northampton School, following it up with a dominating outing over The Governors Academy in a 46-6 rout and then taking care of business against Milton Academy in a 51-26 win and St. Sebastian’s School, 39-21.
3. Catholic Memorial Knights
Catholic Memorial (7-2) are once again loaded with Power 4 talent, with a handful that’ll be making the short trip over to Boston College after their time with the Knights. Among the myriad of Boston College commitments are 2026 three-star linemen Marcelino Antunes, Mac Fitzgerald, 2027 safety Jackson Tucker and 2028 athlete Ramar Thomas.
The Knights are always in the mix when it comes to MIAA’s Division 2 classification and their most impressive victory of the season was a 56-32 romp over St. Francis (N.Y.) several weeks ago. The Knights dropped their first game of the season a few weeks ago against Xaverian Brothers with New England Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye in attendance, 25-22.
Catholic Memorial booked their ticket to the Division II Super Bowl when they rolled over Winchester (10-1), 49-0, in a state semifinal.
4. King Phillip Regional Warriors
King Philip Reg (11-0) remain steady at No. 4 in the latest Massachusetts high school football rankings after a narrow 21-13 win over Malden Catholic in the state semifinal round of the MIAA Division III playoffs.
