Massachusetts High School Football: Xaverian Brothers holds off St. John’s Prep
WESTWOOD, Mass.- It’s not often that two teams play each other a week before they play for a championship of any sort. In Massachusetts high school football, however, it’s a possible feat.
On Thursday morning, No. 1 ranked St. John’s Preparatory School traveled over to face No. 5 Xaverian Brothers, two teams that will face each other for next week’s MIAA Division I Super Bowl. Folks on hand got a sneak peek at what the championship game will bring as the Hawks held off the Eagles, 21-18, in a Thanksgiving Day matchup.
Xaverian Brothers got on the board first in the opening quarter as junior signal caller Will Wood (236 yards, two touchdowns) connected with running back James Goedde on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Wood would add another scoring pass in the first half, this time a 80-yard touchdown throw to all-everything Christian McIntyre (five catches, 177 yards) to go up 14-0.
The Eagles were without sophomore four-star quarterback Christopher Vargas and relied heavily on the 1-2 running back combo of Maxwell Parent and Jordan Toribio. Parent got St. John’s on the scoreboard just before halftime on a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
Wood and McIntyre connected on another big passing play in the fourth quarter, this time one of 46 yards, leading to a 4-yard touchdown run by running back Bryce Todd to extend the Hawks’ advantage to 21-6.

In Vargas’ place under center was senior quarterback John Budrow, who finished the contest throwing for 154 yards and a touchdown. Parent and Toribio combined for over 170 rushing yards on the dais.
The Hawks and Eagles are set to square off in next week’s Division I state championship on Dec. 6 at 6:15 p.m. at Gillette Stadium.
