New Jersey high school football team forfeits due to health situation

One of the New Jersey high school football teams, No. 5 St. Joseph Regional, will not be in action on Saturday afternoon due to a forfeiture.

According to an Instagram post by St. Joseph Regional’s athletic department, the Green Knights’ scheduled game against Pope John XXIII has been canceled due to a forfeit by the Lions. Per the post, a health situation with the Lions has caused the forfeit.

DUE TO A HEALTH SITUATION AFFECTING OUR OPPONENT, THIS WEEKEND’S GAME FOR GREEN KNIGHTS FOOTBALL HAS BEEN CANCELED. SATURDAY’S OPPONENT, POPE JOHN HS, HAS FORFEITED THE SCHEDULED GAME AND WILL NOT BE TRAVELING TO MONTVALE TO COMPETE AGAINST SJR. THE GREEN KNIGHTS’ NEXT SCHEDULED GAME IS SATURDAY OCTOBER 25th AT BERGEN CATHOLIC.”

The Green Knights are currently 4-2 on the season and will earn its fifth win heading into next week’s contest against nationally ranked Bergen Catholic, which are ranked as the No. 2 team in the state of New Jersey.

The Lions have fallen on hard times this season, sitting with a 1-5 record and their most recent contest was a 17-15 loss to Seton Hall Prep. Pope John XXIIII’s only victory of the 2025 season came back on Sep. 13 against Kellenberg Memorial, a 35-0 win.
