New York High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Sep. 7

New York high school football is underway throughout the state and many of the top programs were in play. Top ranked Iona Prep holds down the No. 1 spot after a convincing 37-7 rout over Somers at the Hero’s Bowl Classic in Albany.
Which other New York high school football teams make the cut in our first rankings of the regular season?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest New York high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey.
1. Iona Preparatory School Gaels
Iona Prep (1-0) has remained in the top spot since the preseason after winning the New York State Catholic title last year and has started the 2025 season off with a proverbial bang. It kicked off on Sept. 6 with a high-profile, neutral site matchup against Somers, which was riding a 27-game winning streak.
The Gaels halted the Tuskers’ winning streak and routed them, 37-7, at the Hero’s Bowl Classic. Quarterback Julian Guzman led the way for Iona Prep, throwing for a game-high 223 yards and four touchdowns.
Running back Crew Davis, a three-star prospect committed to North Carolina, will be the spearhead to the Gaels’ efforts on the offensive side of the ball. Iona Prep’s defensive line should be among the best in the Empire State, thanks in large part to the return of Dalton Lozin.
2. Monsignor Farrell Lions
If there was a team out of New York that made probably the biggest statement over the past week was Monsignor Farrell (2-0), which soundly defeated Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse) in a 37-12.
Sophomore quarterback Bryce Moye has been impressive in the Lions’ first two games as the signal caller completed 21 of 27 passes for 349 yards and four touchdowns. Senior running back Kevin Gumb Jr. has been the engine of the ground game, with the tailback rushed for 255 yards and five touchdowns.
Monsignor Farrell now enters a three-game stretch where they face one of New Jersey’s top teams in Delbarton and St. Anthony’s.
3. Shaker Bison
Shaker (1-0) in 2024 saw two things end to Christian Brothers Academy (Albany) last season: its undefeated start to the season and in the playoffs when they lost in the sectional title game.

The 2025 season kicked off as the Bison dominated Arlington in a 32-0 rout to start off at 1-0.
The Bison entered this fall looking to extend its streak of winning New York high school football campaigns to 14. Next up for Shaker is a home date against Ballston Spa.
4. St. Francis Red Raiders
St. Francis (1-0) opened up the 2025 season in thrilling fashion as they defeated Jackson in a 42-35 offensive shootout. When it comes to offenses, the Red Raiders can keep up with the best of ’em.
The Red Raiders got a solid outing in Week 1 from junior quarterback Trent Buttles, who completed 14 of 29 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns.
Entering this season, the Red Raiders are seeking to reach the state championship game for the first time since 2018. The Red Raiders will need big seasons from Domonic Cook, Jr. and Mason Anderson if they are to accomplish that goal.
5. Shenendehowa Plainsmen
Another New York high school football team that exploded on the offensive end, rounding out our Top 5 in the rankings is the Shenendehowa Plainsmen, which opened up the 2025 campaign with a 49-14 thrashing of Harrison.
The Plainsmen were anything but on the offensive end last week, with the offense compiling 448 total yards behind a balanced attack between the air and ground. Jack Clawson paced Shenendehowa, completing 12 of 17 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns.
