Trailing 14-7 in the second half, someone had to step up for No. 4 St. John Bosco (Calif.) if they were going to defend home turf against the visiting No. 2 St. Frances Academy (Md.).

It was going to be Texas A&M commit Madden Williams who proved to be the difference maker.

Williams caught eight passes for 193 yards and a touchdown, leading the Braves to a 21-14 win over the Panthers Friday night at Panish Family Stadium.

This was your true battle of two top five teams

There’s plenty of matchups where people are boasting this ranked team against that ranked team.

When St. Frances Academy and St. John Bosco (3-0) met on Friday night in Southern California, folks were witnessing what a titanic matchup is on the high school level. For just about every bit of the game, each team proved why they belong in the conversation as the best in the land.

Both teams stated their respective case on the field as St. John Bosco used their passing attack in order to loosen up the Panthers’ defense and begin getting first downs leading into touchdowns. For the Panthers, the game plan fairly simple: Play great defense and run the ball effectively.

Doing those things might’ve been a tad bit easier on the East Coast, but no matter what you do to prepare for the time change and other variables, you can’t simulate it all. That’s the beauty of high school football is not many do exactly know how good the teams are up until they prove it on the field of play.

St. Frances Academy had no answer for Madden Williams

For as good as the St. Frances Academy defense looked against Chaminade-Madonna at the Broward County Classic, it had plenty of moments where they looked elite on Friday night against St. John Bosco.

Well, for the exception of they just couldn’t stop Texas A&M commit Madden Williams in the pass game. Proof was in the statistics by game’s end as the future Aggie tallied eight grabs for 193 yards and a touchdown. The Panthers (1-1) had done a pretty nice job against some Power 4 level talent out wide down in South Florida.

Having no answer for Williams ultimately proved to be the difference as the senior wide receiver went off in the second half, seemingly unchecked. Now all St. Frances Academy can do is wonder what they could’ve done better to remain undefeated heading back to Baltimore.

Where does this place the mythical national championship at right now?

Oh we know everyone around the country was watching this game closely because unlike college football, where there’s a national playoff system and all, in high school there’s no such thing.

Heck, there’s not even one agreed upon national champion when the season ends.

What many can do is look at dream scenarios of which team could run the table with the toughest schedule and stake the claim to being the best team in the land. For St. Frances Academy, it looked like a win in Bellflower and there was a path to being undefeated until they faced IMG Academy on Nov. 7.

For St. John Bosco, remain steady and undefeated, set yourself up for a showdown with Mater Dei on Halloween and see where that takes you. Right now, the aforementioned Monarchs remain No. 1 and we’re pretty certain the Braves will jump to the all too familiar second position for them.
