No. 6 Bishop Gorman edges No. 17 Santa Margarita Catholic

When No. 6 Bishop Gorman (Nev.) made the 6-hour commute into the Golden State to face off against No. 17 Santa Margarita Catholic (Calif.), reasons to believe that the Gaels could lose a second in a row were there.
Coming off a heartbreaking loss at home against Mater Dei in what could’ve been a season defining victory, instead turned into avoiding losing consecutive games for the first time since 2018. What ended up occurring on Saturday night was Bishop Gorman remaining in the mythical national championship conversation.
The Gaels took advantage of turnovers and edged out the Eagles, 14-0, at Saddleback College Stadium. Bishop Gorman improved to 5-1 on the season and will face Palo Verde back at home on Friday night.
What ultimately proved to the be the difference maker in the game overall were two costly interceptions throw by Santa Margarita quarterback Trace Johnson (Tulane commit).
The first interception occurred in the opening quarter when junior cornerback Kamil Loud jumped a Johnson hitch pass and returned it all the way back for a touchdown.

Santa Margarita (4-2) had its chances to get on the scoreboard, with a field goal attempt going wide and another pick ending a promising drive. The Eagles’ defense, though, held up their end of the bargain as they held strong outside of one Gaels’ legitimate scoring drive to no other touchdowns yielded.
Bishop Gorman would add another touchdown just before intermission when Noah Cole scored from two yards out. The defenses dug in all throughout the second half as neither team would register a point on the scoreboard.
In what looked like a game that could see plenty of scoring as the primetime high school football game on a Saturday night, turned into a defensive slugfest between the national powerhouses.
