The school district for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools was preparing for a boycott by high school football coaches regarding their lack thereof when it comes to pay.

According to a report by the Charlotte Observer, a coalition of coaches were planning to boycott Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools over what they deem a lack of pay, which has not seen an increase since 2018. The organized group of coaches were planning to sit out a practice or even a game in protest of the low coaching pay in the district.

In the report, it states that coaching pay in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg district last saw a raise seven years ago, going from $4,172 to $5,006, but that amount is paid out to coaches as a bonus and taxed at nearly 50 percent.

Coaches for the district are frequently expected to drive buses to games, requiring them to obtain special licenses and they’re not reimbursed for the money, time linked to doing so.

Former Carolina Panthers’ star defensive back Captain Munnerlyn, a first-year head coach at Chambers High School, spoke out at a media day at Independence High School back in August regarding the $5,000 coaching pay.

“I’ve got to make sure kids get home safely, make sure the locker room is clean and wash the clothes,” Munnerlyn said via the report. “The amount of time you miss from your family and kids, it doesn’t add up with the pay. You look at other states, like South Carolina, and the pay is different. You look at a place like Georgia and the pay is totally different. Even in my home state of Alabama it’s so much better, and to see guys coaching here a long time (in CMS) and getting the same pay I get as a first-year coach, I think it’s ridiculous.”

Munnerlyn spent 10 seasons in the NFL from 2009-2018, playing for the Panthers, Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings. In Munnerlyn’s first season, he has led the Cougars to a 3-5 record.
