North Carolina High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Aug. 25

The North Carolina high school football season is in full swing. While hundreds of teams from the state have started their quest for championship glory, only a select few will win a title this fall. The majority of the state’s top 25 teams earned victories to open their respective campaigns. Here are North Carolina’s best squads after the first week of competition, according to the Massey Ratings.

1. William Amos Hough (1-0)

The Huskies scored a 14-10 opening weekend victory over South Carolina’s South Pointe. Ethan Royal’s two-yard rushing touchdown opened up the scoring for William Amos Hough. Royal added another rushing TD to give the Huskies the lead, while Drew Johnson’s interception preserved the victory. Hough’s North Carolina high school football season continues against Independence on Aug. 29.

2. Grimsley (1-0)

The Whirlies escaped with a 28-27 overtime victory against West Charlotte in an instant classic. This result extends Grimsley’s winning streak to 17 games dating back to their undefeated 2024-25 North Carolina high school football season. Their defense of the Class 4A state championship continues versus West Forsyth on Aug. 29.

3. Mallard Creek (1-0)

The Mavericks are off to a good start after defeating Rolesville 36-21. Mallard Creek scored its first poitns of the season in memorable fashion, with Samuel Cheeseboro connecting with Khalil Price on 4th and 17. The Rams didn’t find the endzone until the third quarter, which was too late to overcome the Mavericks’ advantage. North Carolina high school football’s third-best team continues its schedule against Virginia’s Warwick on Aug. 30.

4. Weddington (1-0)

The Warriors unleashed a statement game against Mooresville to open the North Carolina high school football season. Weddington scored the game’s first 31 points and didn’t allow the Blue Devils to score until the fourth quarter. Walker Powell completed a 78-yard touchdown pass to Kelson Tate while Brody Anson and Anthony Barrino powered the Warriors’ run game with three rushing touchdowns. The Warriors will target a 2-0 start as they face Myers Park on Aug. 29.

5. Providence Day School (1-0)

The Chargers sneaked past Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic for a 29-28 victory. Quarterback Zaid Lott (Syracuse) carried Providence Day School with 159 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Four-star Clemson wide receiver commit Gordon Sellars contributed six catches for 79 yards. Next up for the Chargers is a North Carolina high school football game against Rolesville on Aug. 29.
