The high school football season kicked off in North Carolina last week, and many of the top programs in the Tar Heel State were in action. Plenty of interesting results followed.

Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 North Carolina high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Sept. 9.

1. William Amos Hough Huskies

The best team in North Carolina high school football was engaged in a tight battle against Virginia’s Highland Springs. However, William Amos Hough found a way to win and stay undefeated after three games. Piercon Selland’s 26-yard field goal proved to be the winning margin in the 17-14 contest. Meanwhile, quarterback Ethan Royal completed two touchdown passes to Jayden White. Hough can improve to 4-0 by defeating Mooresville on September 12.

2. Grimsley Whirlies

The Whirlies had another impressive victory in their 48-21 handling of East Forsyth. Grimsley opened the game with a touchdown off a fumble recovery. Micah Williams had two rushing touchdowns, while Brody Lowe had a couple of touchdown throws and caught another score. The Whirlies will go on the road against Southwest Guilford on September 19.

3. Providence Day School Chargers

The Chargers remain undefeated after a 32-7 domination of Charlotte Catholic. Syracuse commit Zaid Lott threw for 182 passing yards, rushed for 117 yards, and scored three touchdowns (two passing). Likewise, four-star wide receiver Gordon Sellars finished with 110 receiving yards and a touchdown. Providence Day can remain undefeated by defeating the Butler Bulldogs on September 12.

4. Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders

The Crusaders are at 3-0 to begin the 2025 North Carolina high school football season. Their latest game was a 35-3 onslaught against Southern School of Energy and Sustainability. It’s the second time this season that Cardinal Gibbons has limited an opponent to single-digit scoring. The Spartans had no answers to the Crusaders’ ground attack that generated 289 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Noah Terry had 128 rushing yards and a touchdown while quarterback Gannon Jones added two rushing scores. Cardinal Gibbons will visit Southeast Raleigh on September 12.

5. Weddington Warriors

After losing to Myers Park last week, the Warriors bounced back with a convincing 49-7 victory against Monroe. Carrying a 2-1 record, Weddington will travel to Shelby and face the Crest Chargers on September 12.

6. Mallard Creek Mavericks

The Mavericks are still one of North Carolina’s best teams after a 63-13 loss to Georgia’s Grayson Rams. Mallard Creek surrendered 35 unanswered points in the first half and never had a chance for a comeback. The Mavericks will try to get back on track with a win against Myers Park on September 12.

7. Myers Park Mustangs

The Mustangs’ 45-7 triumph against Providence improved their record to 3-0. In that game, Myers Park established a 21-0 halftime lead and never looked back. A road game against Mallard Creek on September 12 could bring them to a 4-0 record.

8. Millbrook Wildcats

The Wildcats are off to a 3-0 start after a 48-7 demolition of Wake Forest. They have surrendered only 20 points in three games, including a shutout against Heritage. Millbrook can improve to 4-0 if it can defeat Athens Drive on September 19.

9. Cleveland Rams

The Rams averaged close to 55 points per game in their first three victories. They scored 52 points against Northern Nash to improve to 3-0. Quarterback Owen Hulbert had 20 completions for 236 passing yards and four touchdowns, while Kaleb Ferrell had 108 rushing yards and a touchdown. Wyatt Caldwell also caught two of Hulbert’s touchdown throws. Cleveland returns to action on September 12 with a road game versus New Bern.

10. West Charlotte Lions

The Lions ascended to the tenth spot among North Carolina high school football teams despite a 10-7 loss to South Carolina’s South Pointe. Quarterback Jamouri Nichols finished the game with 144 all-purpose yards (81 passing) and a touchdown. West Charlotte can bounce back with a win against Providence on September 12.
