Ohio High School Football Top 25 Rankings - Aug. 25

The Ohio high school football season has begun, and hundreds of teams will be competing for championships across the state. With the first week of the schedule already in the books, here’s a look at the top 25 teams in the Buckeye State, according to the Massey Ratings.
1. Archbishop Moeller Crusaders
The Crusaders opened the Ohio high school football season with an emphatic 41-20 victory over Princeton. What was billed as a rivalry night became a one-sided affair as Archbishop Moeller scored 17 third-quarter points to keep the game out of reach. The Crusaders pounded the Vikings’ defense with five rushing touchdowns, two courtesy of Tyler Josleyn and one from reigning Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year Matt Ponatoski (Kentucky). Archbishop Moeller will aim for a 2-0 start as they face Illinois’ Mt. Carmel on Aug. 30.
2. Avon Eagles
The defending Ohio high school football Division II state champions picked up where they left off by defeating St. Ignatius 40-14. Avon sealed the game by converting two of the Wildcats’ three third-quarter turnovers into touchdowns. Quarterback Blake Elder made his first start after two years and finished with 12 passes for 239 yards. Likewise, the Eagles finished the game with 345 yards on offense. Avon will try to extend their winning streak to 18 games against Florida’s Spruce Creek on Aug. 28.
3. St. Xavier Bombers
The Bombers completed a low-scoring 14-7 victory over Lakota West to open their new Ohio high school football campaign. Jackson Frey completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Taylor to break the scoreless tie. Meanwhile, the two connected on a third-quarter touchdown, which became the winning play. After this victory, St. Xavier will proceed to their Aug. 29 showdown against Centerville.
4. St. Edward Eagles
The Eagles started the Ohio high school football season with a shutout victory over Pickerington North. Running back Brandon White scored three of St. Edward’s four touchdowns, including a receiving TD. The Eagles will continue their season against New Jersey’s Delbarton on Aug. 30.
5. Anderson Raptors
The Raptors devoured Kentucky’s Cooper Jaguars 52-10. Quarterback Owen Scalf finished with 333 passing yards and three touchdowns, while running back Jordan Davis had 14 carries for 101 rushing yards and three touchdowns. On defense, linebacker Brady Kuhn had two sacks, while four-star cornerback Ace Alston had an interception. After that win, Anderson will face West Clermont, their first Ohio high school football opponents this season, on Aug. 29.
