The state of Oklahoma might not be known as a high school football mecca like its neighbors in Texas, but the Sooner State still produces plenty of Division I talent and competitive teams.

Recently though, at least at the high school level, there haven’t been any programs from the state who were considered national contenders. At least until now. State powerhouse Bixby — the winners of the last three 6A-I titles — currently ranks as the nation’s No. 1 team, according to the Massey Ratings.

The Spartans sit above national powerhouses IMG Academy and St. John Bosco (Calif.), leading the second-place Ascenders by more than a full tenth of a point. (For reference, the difference between IMG and Bosco is less than four-hundredths of a point.)

Bixby is off to a 5-0 start this season, playing each of those games against teams currently ranked among the state’s top 25 teams. They opened the year with a 49-21 blowout of No. 3 Owasso, then routed Charles Page and Choctaw by a combined score of 113-14.

Bixby looking for ninth state title since 2015

In an enormous showdown with perennial powerhouse Jenks, they put up 66 points in a game that matched two programs with a combined 28 state championships. Led by quarterback Carson Kirby, who threw for six touchdowns, the Spartans rolled to a 66-35 win to remain undefeated.

And this weekend, they put on their most dominant performance to date with an 81-6 bludgeoning of Moore. The Spartans led 63-6 at halftime, buoyed by four touchdown passes from Kirby. And they were just four points short of tying their own school record set last year in an 85-24 win over Edmond North.

The toughest stretch of the year looks to be behind them now, with five games remaining and three against ranked opponents. According to the Massey Ratings predictions, they’re favored by 35-plus points in each of those contests.

If they can their next five, they’ll be in prime position as the state’s No. 1 seed to win their eighth consecutive state title and ninth in the past 10 years.
