Ole Miss RB commit sets Mississippi high school football rushing record

A new name is coming to the high school football record books in Mississippi.

In the midst of a dominant offensive performance, Kemper County (Miss.) running back Damarius Yates put on one of the single-most impressive rushing stat lines in state history. The Ole Miss-bound ‘back rushing 29 times on Friday night, amassing 448 yards and a state record eight touchdowns.

As a team, the Wildcats racked up 70 points (second-best in school history), while rushing for 627 yards (a school record) and totaling 706 yards in all.

The electric offensive performance also gave them a much-needed 70-44 victory over move to 3-5 on the season. Kemper County started the season 0-4, but has won three of its last four ahead of its season finale vs. Philadelphia.

For Yates in particular, it was the continuation of a stellar senior campaign. Across the team’s eight games, he has rushed for 1,304 yards and 18 touchdowns on a whopping 10.3 yards per carry.

Across three full varsity seasons, the 5-foot-9, 195-pounder has totaled 3,784 yards and 52 touchdowns with a 10.3 YPC average. He is also a huge threat in the passing game, with 61 career receptions, 977 yards and 10 more scores through the air.

Yates committed to the in-state Rebels in May over offers from Mississippi State, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida State and dozens of other offers. According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services, he is the nation’s No. 114 overall prospect, No. 10 running back and No. 7 player in the state if Mississippi.
