Pennsylvania high school basketball to use shot clock starting in 2028-29 season
Pennsylvania high school basketball has paved the way to having a shot clock. A report from the York Daily Record revealed that the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has approved shot clock usage starting in the 2028-29 season.
This vote will cover varsity and junior varsity games for boys and girls basketball. The PIAA established the three-year leeway to give schools ample time to raise funds for shot clocks and to train officials who will operate it.
The shot clock for Pennsylvania high school basketball went through three rounds. In the first round, the PIAA failed to approve shot clock usage by one vote. After two successful rounds of voting, the governing body for Pennsylvania high school sports approved the clock’s institution during a final reading.
Since the National Federation of State High School Associations officially approved the 35-shot clock for high school basketball starting in 2021, 32 states have implemented it. Barring any other states that will approve the clock, Pennsylvania will be the 33rd state to use it for their games. Wyoming, Alabama, and South Carolina implement the shot clock only during the regular season. Meanwhile, Missouri, Kentucky, and Florida optionally use the clock.
