Preseason Maine High School Football Top 25 Rankings

Countless storylines emerge as another Maine high school football season is on the horizon. From perennial contenders to up-and-coming challengers, here are the state’s top 25 teams according to Massey.
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans
While the Golden Trojans finished with a 10-3 record last season, two of their three losses were against Portland. That count includes Thornton Academy’s 35-14 loss in the Maine high school football Class A state championship game. The Trojans will be competing for a better result this year, and their schedule starts against Scarborough on September 5.
2. Portland Bulldogs
The Bulldogs finished the 2024-25 season with a five-game winning streak, including their victory over Thornton Academy for the Maine high school football state crown, their first since 2002. Portland will start its title defense against Oxford Hills Comprehensive on September 5.
3. Kennebunk Rams
With a 9-1 record, the Rams looked good heading into last season’s Maine high school football Class B state championship game. However, they lost that important game to Falmouth after scoring a season-low 13 points. Kennebunk will try to regain the state title they won in 2023. To do so, they must do well during their initial games, including their rematch against the defending Class B state champions on September 5.
4. Bonny Eagle Scots
While the Scots had more wins than losses, their season ended with a defeat to Noble in the Maine high school football Class A state quarterfinals. It’s been six years since Bonny Eagle last won a state title. They can end that drought in the 2025-26 season, which starts for them against South Poland on September 5.
5. Oxford Hills Comprehensive Vikings
It was a roller-coaster season for the Maine high school football team shared by Oxford Hills and Buckfield. They lost their first three games, won the next four, and dropped the last two for a 4-5 record. The Vikings will compete to bounce back from that disappointing finish, starting with their 2025-26 season opener against Fryeburg Academy on August 29.
