Rose Bowl to host CIF’s Southern Section Division I football final

Get ready, Southern California high school football fans. The CIF Southern Section’s Division I state championship game is returning to the Rose Bowl this fall.

According to a post on X by the Los Angeles Times’ Eric Sondheimer, the Rose Bowl, known as the “Granddaddy of Them All”, will serve host as the CIF Southern Section’s Division I state championship game. The venue is just days away from celebrating its 103rd anniversary, as the Rose Bowl officially opened on Oct. 28, 1922.

Last year’s Southern Section Division I final was between St. John Bosco and Mater Dei, with the latter coming away with the 31-24 victory.

No. 1 ranked St. John Bosco and No. 11 ranked Mater Dei have met in the CIF Southern Section Division I state championship seven times since 2016, with the Monarchs leading the series 4-3. This year, however, could see different teams in the final for the first time since 2021, when Mater Dei defeated Servite, 24-7.

No. 8 Centennial, No. 10 Sierra Canyon and No. 16 Santa Margarita Catholic all stake arguments on possibly breaking up another St. John Bosco-Mater Dei final. Centennial and Santa Margarita Catholic have already defeated Mater Dei this season and Sierra Canyon is poised to go undefeated at 10-0 heading into the postseason.
