St. Michael Catholic (Ala.) coach, future NFL Hall of Famer Philip Rivers signs with Colts
At age 44 and currently still coaching St. Michael Catholic (Ala.) as the head football coach, Philip Rivers will be making his return to the National Football League after five years removed from his last snap back in 2020.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Rivers has signed on to the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad after a Monday night workout with the team.
Rivers just completed his fifth season as the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic, with the Cardinals’ season ending in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 4A state semifinals, losing to eventual champion Jackson, 44-23. The Cardinals finished the season with a 13-1 record and with the pieces returning on both sides of the ball, will be a favorite to win Alabama’s Class 4A in 2026.
Rapoport had reported on Monday that the elder Rivers would fly up to Indianapolis and workout for the Colts, whom are thin at the quarterback position due to multiple injuries at the position. If the workout went well, the team could sign Rivers to their practice squad, which ended up coming to fruition.

Rivers had a Hall of Fame worthy career in the NFL, playing from 2004 to 2020, throwing for 63,440 yards and 421 touchdowns between his time with the Colts and Los Angeles Chargers, respectfully.
This wouldn’t be the first time a current high school head football coach went to sign with an NFL team while still being the lead man of the program, with Bridgewater doing so after the 2024 season after leading his alma mater Miami Northwestern to Florida’s Class 3A state championship.
