Tennessee High School Football: Jared Curtis lights it up, Nashville Christian squeaks by Tyner

Two of the last unbeaten teams in Tennessee high school football went at it on Friday night in Nashville.
All eyes, as usual, were on Nashville Christian senior quarterback Jared Curtis. Even star Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia was in attendance. The Five-Star Plus+ Georgia commit delivered, and it took a gargantuan effort for the Eagles to squeak past a game Tyner Academy team in a 49-42 win.
Curtis tallied six touchdowns, including a game-winning 8-yard rushing score with less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter. He threw for four touchdowns in the first half, and despite a fumble in a tie game late, the gunslinger made up for his turnover and kept his team undefeated, now 7-0 on the year.
The arm strength was on display all night. Each of his first two passing scores came off the back foot and looked pretty soaring through the air. When you see Curtis aim downfield, it’s fair to assume the ball is landing in the receiver’s breadbasket.
The lone non-Curtis touchdown for NCA came from senior running back TJ Ward, who found a gap and scooted for a 45-yard score. Curtis’ fourth TD pass of the first half was a laser under pressure:
Tyner never wavered and continued to keep some sort of pace, though. The Rams were facing a 15-point deficit at halftime, but a Dion Edwards touchdown and 2-point conversion made it 35-28 at the break.
Curtis’ fifth and final passing score came early in the third quarter. He evaded pressure and delivered a jump throw that found Zane Crampton over the middle. The Eagles had a chance to put the game away later in the quarter, but a missed field goal and new life on defense for Tyner finally settled the game down a bit.

NCA attempted a fake punt at the start of the fourth quarter and didn’t convert. The Rams took advantage, drove down the field, scored a touchdown and another 2-point conversion to tie things up at 42.
Curtis then fumbled trying to create more magic on another scramble. Tyner had a chance to take a late lead, but couldn’t convert a fourth down inside the NCA 35. The Eagles’ final drive saw Curtis shake off the turnover and conclude the game-winning drive with a keeper.
An undefeated season remains in the cards for Nashville Christian. The No. 14 team in Tennessee per the Massey Ratings, the Eagles are favored to win each of the three remaining games on its regular-season calendar. Up next is a date with Columbia Academy on Oct. 17.
