Texas High School Football: DeSoto upsets No. 2 Southlake Carroll

The DeSoto Eagles literally started the 2025 Texas high school football season at the bottom and now they’re here, heading to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 6A-II state championship game next week at AT&T Stadium.

DeSoto running back Sarod Baker scored on a 1-yard run with 6:42 remaining in the game, lifting the Eagles to an improbable 57-44 victory over No. 2 nationally ranked Southlake Carroll on Saturday afternoon at Dragon Stadium in Southlake. The Eagles needed a fourth and goal stop of Pittsburgh signee Angelo Renda to hold onto the win in the final seconds.

The victory for the Eagles figures to impact national rankings across the board as Southlake Carroll is considered one of the nation’s top teams by many polls. For where DeSoto started the season at, this win seemed unlikely at the very least.

DeSoto started the season 0-2, kicking off 2025 with a 70-28 drubbing at the hands of Creekside (Ga.). The following week, the Eagles fell to defending Class 6A-I champion North Crowley, drawing doubt on where this DeSoto team was exactly at when it came to remaining one of Texas high school football’s best teams.

Baker was coming off last week’s single game record of 384 yards and continued his tear on Saturday afternoon as the running back helped account for four touchdowns in helping lift the Eagles into the state championship game.
