Texas High School Football: Weslaco East head coach Mike Burget retiring

Weslaco East (Texas) will be in the market for a new head football coach for the 2026 season.

On Monday, Mike Burget, who has been at the school since 2006, announced his retirement. He’s been the Wildcats’ head coach since 2013 and is the winningest head coach in Weslaco ISD history.

Weslaco East put together a 4-6 regular season this fall, which concluded with a 24-14 loss to Harlingen South last week. The Wildcats lost their last three regular season games, but did win four of five after beginning the season 0-2.

Burget, who was in his thirteenth year at the helm, was the just the second head coach in program history. He joined the staff in 2006 and eventually replaced Armando Cuellar, who was head coach from 2004-12.

Burget’s tenure will end with an 89-53 record at Weslaco East. The 2025 campaign will go down as the Wildcats’ lone losing season under Burget, who won seven or more games in a season six times. Their last big season came in 2019, when they finished 9-4 and lost in the 6A D-II Regional semifinals to eventual state champion Westlake.

With Burget on the sidelines, Weslaco East made 16 playoff appearances. It won six district titles and six area titles.
