Texas school district considering action against high school football team

According to a KWTX 10 report, a Texas school district is holding a meeting on Friday to consider potential action against the Axtell Longhorns football team for allegedly using a ineligible player.
The District 7-2A Executive Committee would meet regarding “possible action concerning items related to allegations of student resident violations and subsequent eligibility,” which per the report, was apart of the meeting agenda posted on the Axtell ISD website.
Axtell (6-1) has had themselves a successful 2025 campaign thus far, with the lone loss of the season coming against Kerens School back on Sep. 4, 20-14. Since that decision on the field, the Longhorns have reeled off five straight victories, including last week’s 45-0 rout of Italy.
It wasn’t that long ago that another team from Class 2A-1, Region II, District 7 also found themselves in trouble and out of the playoff picture.

Back in early September, Rio Vista has been barred from partaking in the UIL’s 2A-1, Region II, District 7 playoffs after the district’s executive committee voted unanimously to ban the Eagles from postseason play. The decision to ban Rio Vista from playoffs came from the conclusion of allegations stemming from student-athlete recruiting.
Rio Vista did appeal, but the decision was upheld along with a two-game suspension for head coach Matthew Woodard as well.
For Axtell, which is among one of the top teams in Texas’ Class 2A, have a bye this week before they are slated to return to action on Halloween against Bosqueville (6-1).
