Top 10 Games of the 2025 Maine High School Football Season

The clock is ticking for high school football fans in the state of Maine as the 2025 season kicks off in early September with a strong slate of games in the opening week.
When looking at the totality of the 2025 schedule, there’s intriguing matchups from start to finish, with the rematch of the Class B state championship game between Falmouth and Kennebunk to jumpstart the season on Sep. 5. What other games should folks be watching out for?
We’ve put together a list of Maine high school football games we think might be the ones to take a scenic drive on, grab some food from the concession stands and checkout this fall.
1. Thornton Academy at Portland, Oct. 3
When it comes to Maine high school football, these two teams are as good as it gets. The top two teams in the MPA’s Class A over the last two years and this would also be a rematch from last year’s state championship game. Doesn’t get too much better than this.
2. Falmouth at Kennebunk, Sep. 5
Another rematch of 2024 state championship game, this time of the Class B classification. The Navigators and Rams collide for a matchup that could boast an argument to being No. 1 in many cases. We put it right behind Thornton Academy-Portland for the pure fact of Kennebunk having to reload while Falmouth brings back many of its starters from last season.
3. Thornton Academy at Noble, Oct. 31
Talk about highly entertaining matchups, this contest twice last year didn’t lack for offense in any way. The Trojans just got by the Knights in a 33-26 decision and then defeated them again in the postseason, 57-29. Though Noble went 0-2 against Thornton Academy last season, we feel like the Knights are due for a win in this budding rivalry.
4. Leavitt vs Wells, Oct. 3
Both teams are now in Class C, they enter the season as two of the state’s more dominant programs since 2010. The two programs have combined for 10 state championships and always remain a couple of playoff contenders annually. Leavitt has beaten Wells in seven consecutive meetings dating back to 2013 and could make it eight come early October. For historical reference, according to mainehighschoolfootball.com, the last time Wells defeated Leavitt was in the 2011 Class B state title game.
5. Hermon at Foxcroft Academy, Sept. 5
A battle between two regional champions from the 2024 season takes place come mid-September. Hermon was the Northern Class C regional champion against Foxcroft Academy, whom won the Northern Class D region title. The Hawks dropped last year’s meeting 17-0, but this one could get pretty interesting as it’s a solid Week 1 opener for both teams.

6. Fryeburg Academy at Falmouth, Oct. 17
It’s always a solid matchup when two state championship teams end up playing each other. Both Fryeburg Academy and Falmouth were among two of the top defensive teams in 2024. Navigators won the ’24 the Class B state title while Fryeburg was last year’s Class C champion. If you’re looking for one of the better matchups in the second half of the season, this would certainly be a good one to checkout.
7. Bonny Eagle at South Portland, Sept. 5
Arguably a couple of the state’s top teams out of Class A and when looking at their meeting from the 2024 season, it’s been a minute prior to that since the Scots and Red Riots have met. You would have to go back to the 2018 campaign to find the last time Bonny Eagle and South Portland played each other, with the former winning 34-6. Last year, the Scots narrowly came away with a 24-19 win over the Red Riots and it should make for another competitive contest in Week 1.
8. Lawrence vs Cony, Oct. 17
When it comes to Maine’s Class B classification, there’s not many Northern end teams that have largely contended the way Lawrence and Cony have the last four years. In the meeting between the two programs last season, the Bulldogs edged the Rams out in a 28-12 decision.
9. Deering vs Portland, Nov. 28
For this Maine tilt, you have to wait up until Thanksgiving to see it as one of the nation’s longest running games on Turkey Day comes between Portland’s two public schools. Portland is the state’s defending Class A state champions and last year had to play five days after the title game against Deering, pulling off a 21-18 win.
10. Old Orchard Beach at Stearns, Sept. 19
We didn’t forget you, 8-man high school football, which is popular in Maine. This game is a rematch of the 2024 8-man small school state title game and two of the most dominant programs in the Pine Tree State. Old Orchard Beach has built themselves up to being the state’s top program when it comes to 8-man and are gunning for a repeat come November.
