Top California high school quarterback making mid-season transfer

One of California’s top young high school football prospects is on the move midway through his sophomore season.
Sports Illustrated’s Tarek Fattal reported Thursday that Oaks Christian (Calif.) star quarterback Treyvone Towns has left the school, according to athletic director Brad Cook. He reportedly will be moving over to Rancho Cucamonga.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder is making the change after already playing multiple games this season for the Lions, who are off to a 1-2 start and reportedly in the midst of program turmoil.
Across three games, Towns has completed 41 of 70 passes (59%) while throwing for 526 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. As a freshman last year, he broke out with a campaign where completed 63 percent of his passes while throwing for nearly 2,000 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. After that season, he drew offers from programs across the country including Ohio State, Penn State, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas and others.

With Towns at the helm, the Lions finished with 9-4 record and a CIF Southern Section Division II semifinals appearance. They’ve struggled out of the gate this fall though, dropping their opener to Chaminade before a 63-0 rout at the hands of Sierra Canyon. Towns and Co. responded with a 35-28 win over winless Bakersfield Liberty.
They’ll now have to play their final seven games without the state’s No. 5-ranked quarterback in the 2028 class and No. 23 player at his position nationally. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be able to join the Rancho Cucamonga team this season after transferring, but the Cougars themselves are off to a 1-2 start after losing by a combined five points to No. 7 Orange Lutheran and No. 19 Murrieta Valley.
Despite the losses, RCHS sits at No. 25 in the California Rivals Composite High School Football Team Ranking.
