Top Texas quarterback off to blazing-hot start, including 9-touchdown game

Coming into his junior season, Bastrop quarterback Weston Nielsen was already considered one of the top signal-callers in Texas high school football.
He has more than lived up to the billing through three games. The Bears are off to a 3-0 start behind Nielsen, who has thrown for more than 342 yards per contest and tossed 12 touchdown in that span. But what he did on Friday night against Prestonwood Christian will put him in the school’s records book. In a game that ended with a final score of 70-55 in favor of Bastrop, Nielsen completed 22 of 32 passes for 549 yards and seven touchdowns.
He also rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in the victory. The hot start follows up a sophomore campaign where Nielsen threw for 3,185 yards and 37 touchdowns while completing 177 of his 266 passing attempts (.665) in 12 games.
That production in just his first full year starting for Bastrop has earned him interest from colleges across the country. Nielsen already holds offers from Arizona State, Texas A&M, SMU, Oregon, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and others.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder is the No. 239 overall prospect nationally in the 2027 class, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services. He also ranks as the nation’s No. 20 quarterback and the No. 4 passer in the Lone Star State.

Nielsen has already been predicted to commit to the Sun Devils by Rivals national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman, and told him this recently about his recruitment and relationships with the ASU staff.
“I love Coach Dillingham. He’s awesome — and so is Coach Arroyo and the rest of the staff,” Nielsen told Rivals. “They have been amazing to me this past year. They’ve repeatedly told me that I am their No. 1 QB. They also took their time to individually talk to me about their program.”
