Utah High School Football Playoffs: Corner Canyon cruises to quarterfinals

Corner Canyon is after its third UHSAA 6A state title in a row and the Chargers began its postseason push on Friday night. Layton was no match.

Behind a four-touchdown performance from senior four-star quarterback Helaman Casuga, top-seeded Corner Canyon smoked the Lancers 63-9 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Casuga didn’t have to play the full game as backup Bronson Evans came in and threw a pair of touchdowns, too. Senior three-star wide receiver Kai Meza had three scores in the breezy victory.

The result comes as no surprise, but the Chargers played as advertised. Layton, the No. 16 seed in the bracket, won a play-in game last week over Cedar Valley. Corner Canyon will now square off against No. 8 Syracuse next Friday for a spot in the semifinals.

The Chargers played just nine regular season games and went 8-1, with their lone blemish coming against Lone Peak in an upset 42-21 drubbing on Sept. 19. The Knights, who last won the state title in 2021, have now beaten Corner Canyon multiple years in a row. They are the No. 6 seed and defeated No. 11 Farmington 41-14 on Friday night. They’ll now play No. 3 Davis next week.

Casuga and the Corner Canyon offense averaged over 45 points per game in the regular season. The Texas A&M commit has slung for over 2,400 yards this fall. Meza, who pledged to Cal earlier this week, has emerged as a senior and has over 700 receiving yards to his name this season. The Corner Canyon defense has allowed 20-plus points just three times all year.
