While quarterback Devon Dampier is undergoing a transition period, he continues to extend his assistance to younger football players. Dampier donated $9,000 to North Canyon High School, which could be enough to procure uniforms and football equipment.

Typically, college or pro players support their high school alma mater. In that case, Dampier should have extended his help to Scottsdale’s Saguro High School. Instead, he selected North Canyon because his younger brother is a part of the team.

After spending time with his brother and his North Canyon teammates, Dampier found out that the high school football program is struggling to raise money for the necessary equipment. Hence, the 2022 Ed Doherty Award winner gave back by donating the said amount.

In addition to keeping the program afloat, North Canyon hopes that Devon Dampier’s kindness will help their players turn the program around. Last season, the Rattlers lost all ten games, including three shutout losses by 27, 50, and 61 points. Worst yet, they scored only 20 points throughout their last six matches. Two of their opponents, Deer Valley and Goldwater, scored over 60 points against them.

The losing record isn’t an aberration because North Canyon’s last winning record came in the 2016-17 season when they went 6-4 under head coach Jose Lucero. Five years earlier, the Rattlers finished with a 6-5 record.

As for Devon Dampier, he will be playing for the Utah Utes after entering the transfer portal last December. In his final year with the New Mexico Lobos, Dampier had 2,768 passing yards, 1,166 rushing yards, and 31 touchdowns (19 rushing). Those numbers earned him First-Team All-Mountain West Conference honors.

The Utes hope that Dampier’s versatility could open more wrinkles on their offense. However, regardless of his performance in every game, Dampier will get support from the people he helped.
