The 2024 Virginia high school football season continues even as September wraps up. Hundreds of games have occurred over the weekend starting Sept. 26, wherein five teams included in the latest Virginia On3 Massey Ratings have defeated their opponents.

However, that’s only the beginning. Seventeen of the top 25 teams will play games on Sept. 27 or 28. In addition to the final scores of the teams that played on the 26th, here are the game predictions for the teams competing on Friday and Saturday.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Top Virginia High School Football results – Sept. 26

– #17 King’s Fork (32) @ Nansemond River (27)
Freedom (7) @ #10 Battlefield (63)
Grassfield (0) @ #5 Oscar Smith (49)
#11 Dinwiddie (22) @ Hopewell (7)
– #21 Heritage (27) @ #4 Liberty Christian (34)
#20 Salem (41) @ Patrick Henry (24)

Top Virginia High School Football games – Sept. 27

Lake Taylor @ #1 Maury
The Maury Commodores have defeated three ranked teams to maintain a perfect record: #7 Highland Springs, #12 Dinwiddie, and Maryland’s #11 Dr. Henry Wise. What’s scary for the Lake Taylor Titans is how Maury made those wins look easy, as the Commodores dominated their Virginia-based opponents 85-14. Therefore, Virginia’s top-ranked team should have no problems defeating the winless Titans at home.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Maury 48, Lake Taylor 7

Gar-Field @ #2 Freedom
Woodbridge’s Freedom Eagles haven’t taken the field this season, though they have forfeited their Aug. 30 game against Coolidge. Despite the delayed start to their 2024 season, they are still ranked second among Virginia high school football teams because they are the two-time defending Class 6 state champions. Competing against the Eagles are the Gar-Field Red Wolves, a team coming off a 49-0 loss to 11th-ranked Battlefield. Despite a rebuilt roster, Freedom should handily defeat Gar-Field in their season opener.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Freedom 48, Gar-Field 7

Chantilly @ #6 Madison
The Chantilly Chargers have dominated their first three opponents, winning by an average margin of 26.7 points. However, Hayfield humiliated them in a 70-0 blowout loss last week. They will visit the sixth-ranked Madison Warhawks, a team that has won its first four games by surrendering 29 points combined. Madison’s sixth-best defense should put the clamps on the Chantilly offense for another easy victory.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Madison 43, Chantilly 6

#7 Highland Springs @ Riverbend
The Springers bounced back from their losses to third-ranked Phoebus and top-ranked Maury with a 50-14 victory over Freeman. They will seek their first winning streak this season as they visit the Riverbend Bears, a team that avenged their loss to Forest Park with a 15-point win over King George. While Riverbend has the better record, they haven’t competed against a team of Highland Springs’ caliber.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Highland Springs 42, Riverbend 14

Colonial Heights @ #8 Matoaca
The Colonial Heights Colonials have followed their season-opening loss to Southampton with victories over New Kent and Nottoway. The Colonials can earn their third victory by upsetting the Matoaca Warriors. However, that’s easier said than done because Matoaca is undefeated after three games and has completed shutout victories against Warhill and Henrico. Therefore, the Warriors are in the groove to secure their fourth victory.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Matoaca 44, Colonial Heights 6

Georgetown Preparatory School @ #9 Woodberry Forest
The Maryland-based Little Hoyas have split their first four games, losing to 13th-ranked Benedictine last week. However, Georgetown Prep is hard to beat when its defense plays well, limiting its opponents to 12 points in its two victories. They will visit ninth-ranked Woodberry Forest, which remains perfect after allowing only seven points to St. Mary’s Ryken, Maryland’s seventh-best team. If the Tigers dominated a top-ten opponent, the 20th-ranked Little Hoyas would fall short.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Woodberry Forest 28, Georgetown Preparatory School 20

#16 Warwick @ Gloucester
It took the Warwick Raiders four weeks to give up points to their opponents this season. While they surrendered 14 points to Menchville, the Raiders poured 52 points, their second-highest output. Warwick will visit the Gloucester Dukes, a team that hasn’t reached double-digit points in its last three games, all losses. Therefore, it won’t be surprising if the Raiders keep the Dukes off the scoreboard to remain undefeated.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Warwick 42, Gloucester 0

#14 Colonial Forge @ Stafford
In a battle of two undefeated teams, the Colonial Forge Eagles are coming off a 35-27 victory over the Patriot Pioneers. Meanwhile, the Indians pulled off a close win against Independence. However, Stafford’s undefeated record will end at Colonial Forge’s hands because of the latter’s superior talent.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Colonial Forge 38, Stafford 14

#19 Indian River @ Deep Creek
The Indian River Braves are at 3-0 after completing consecutive 56-3 victories against Lakeland and Hickory. Therefore, as of late, the Braves’ offensive prowess is a concern for the Deep Creek Hornets, who are coming off a 16-8 win over Grassfield. While Deep Creek will score some points, matching Indian River point-for-point might be challenging.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Indian River 35, Deep Creek 13

Henrico @ #22 Varina
The Henrico Warriors won their first match in the 2024 Virginia high school football season by dominating Tucker. Meanwhile, the Varina Blue Devils would have been 3-0 without their season-opening double-overtime loss to 19th-ranked Indian River. Since then, they’ve registered victories against Hermitage and Forest Park. Varina should get an easy victory at home to improve their record at 3-1.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Varina 42, Henrico 7

Smithfield @ #23 Lafayette
The Lafayette Rams have allowed only six points while scoring 150 in three games. The undefeated run includes two shutout victories against B. T. Washington and New Kent. Even if they are undefeated after three matches, Smithfield might not withstand that onslaught. The Packers may be 3-0, but their last two victories were one-possession games.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Lafayette 42, Smithfield 6

Top Virginia High School Football games – Sept. 28

Bethel @ #3 Phoebus
The Bethel Bruins escaped with a 10-7 home victory against Woodside. Scoring that many points won’t be enough against Virginia high school football’s third-ranked team. The Phoebus Phantoms remain undefeated after scoring 42 and 45 points in consecutive games. Therefore, the Phantoms might overwhelm the Bruins with their offense.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Phoebus 42, Bethel 0

#13 Benedictine @ #25 St. Christopher’s School
The Benedictine Cadets and the St. Christopher’s School Saints share the same path. They are on three-game winning streaks after dropping their season openers to St. Michael and Camden, New Jersey’s 20th-best team, respectively. Even their defenses are on equal footing, as the Cadets have allowed only 9.3 points during their wins. Conversely, St. Christopher’s limited their opponents to 10.3 points in their victories. Despite their comparable stats, Benedictine is still favored to win despite being the road team.
Massey Ratings Prediction: Benedictine 28, St. Christopher’s 14

Episcopal @ #18 St. Michael
The St. Michael Warriors returned to the winning track against Trinity Episcopal 44-28. The Warriors have been impressive this season, especially after completing an upset against 13th-ranked Benedictine and losing by one point to McDonogh School, Maryland’s sixth-best team. Meanwhile, the Episcopal Maroon have dropped their matches against North Cross and St. Christopher’s. St. Michael should take this win; playing at home boosts their chances.
Massey Ratings Prediction: St. Michael 33, Episcopal 20
