Virginia High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Oct. 20

After the round of matches during the third weekend of October, the Virginia On3 Massey Ratings top 25 list as of Oct. 20 features some changes, as the teams ranked 10 to 14 have changed places. Meanwhile, another squad moved up nine spots to enter the top 25. Here’s the latest rankings as the Virginia high school football playoffs draws near.

The On3 Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. Maury

Creating points hasn’t been a problem for the Commodores over their last two games. After scoring 97 points against Manor, they defeated Booker T. Washington by tallying 82. What’s more impressive is that they didn’t surrender a point in that two-game stretch.

Those results made Maury the top-ranked offensive and second-ranked defensive team. They can maintain their undefeated run by winning on the road against Norview on the 25^th.

2. Phoebus

The Phantoms completed their second straight shutout victory, scoring 57 points against Gloucester. Phoebus did the heavy work in the first half, scoring 43 points by halftime. This result improved their record to 7-0 with three games left in the regular season campaign. Their march towards a perfect Virginia high school football season continues when they host Menchville on the 26^th.

3. Oscar Smith

It’s seven up, seven down for the Tigers after a shutout victory against Deep Creek. In addition to the 41-0 outcome, Oscar Smith limited the Hornets to 107 total yards on offense. Meanwhile, they’ve only allowed 28 points throughout the season and kept four opponents to zero points. The Tigers will try to continue their dominant run as they welcome King’s Fork on the 25^th.

4. Liberty Christian Academy

The Bulldogs’ winning streak continues after a one-sided match against Liberty. Justis Belford had three rushing touchdowns in the first half to help establish a 41-6 halftime lead. The Bulldogs ended with 55 points, their highest output this season. That convincing victory should give Liberty Christian much confidence as they visit E.C. Glass on the 25^th.

5. Madison

While the Westfield Bulldogs ushered in a fierce challenge, the Madison Warhawks still emerged victorious to preserve their undefeated run. Down one with four minutes left in regulation, the Warhawks completed a touchdown drive to move ahead and score their seventh consecutive victory. They can extend their unblemished record to eight games by pulling off a road victory against South Lakes.

6. Battlefield

The Bobcats had their lowest output in the 2024 Virginia high school football season, scoring 29 points against Gainesville. However, it was enough to secure their seventh straight victory because they limited the Cardinals to six points. The Bobcats dominate the opposition in style because they haven’t allowed a double-digit scorer in their wins. On deck for Battlefield is a home game against Osbourn Park on the 25^th.

7. Highland Springs

The Springers are on a four-game winning streak. They’ve kept their last two opponents, Henrico and Potomac, off the scoreboard while tallying 76 points combined. Meanwhile, limiting their opponents to 12.85 points per game makes them Virginia high school football’s best defensive team. Scoring another dominant win against Hermitage should give them tremendous momentum for the playoffs.

8. Dinwiddie

The Generals had no problems defeating Petersburg on the road. They’ve established a 35-12 halftime lead and never looked back to clinch their sixth victory in seven games. Dinwiddie averaged 36.7 points per game throughout that stretch, making them the second-best offensive team in Virginia. What’s great is that the Generals will close out the regular season with three home games, starting with their match against Prince George on the 25^th.

9. Woodberry Forest

Save for their 34-28 win against Trinity Episcopal, the Tigers have had a one-sided season through five games. Their latest result is a 28-7 victory against Collegiate, the fourth time they’ve limited an opponent to single digits. Their Virginia high school football season continues with a home game against tenth-ranked Benedictine on the 26^th.

10. Benedictine (+1)

After losing to Gonzaga, the District of Columbia’s top-ranked team, the Cadets earned their second consecutive shutout victory and scored a season-high 62 points against Life Christian Academy. That number helped Benedictine improve to 6-2 with two games left. One of those matches will be a road game against ninth-ranked Woodberry Forest on the 26^th.
