Way-Too-Early National High School Boys Basketball Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Sept. 25

Is it time for hoops action already around the country? The 2024-25 high school boys basketball campaign was one of the most exciting to date and this upcoming 2025-26 season looks to be no different as the national powerhouses are shaping into form as practices begin very soon.
Topping the Top 25 teams in the land is Montverde Academy, which begins a new era under first-year head coach Steve Turner, who took the job coming over from Gonzaga (D.C.). Which other teams around the country join the Eagles, however?
We dive in as high school football season is still in full gear as take an early peek at who are the top teams from around the nation.
Here’s a way-too-early look at the top 25 teams in the country according to the Massey Ratings, which ranks teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory, as of Sep. 25.
1. Montverde Academy (Fla.)
Whenever you’re talking about the best boys basketball programs in the country, you’re not going to go too far without mentioning Montverde Academy. Falling to Dynamic Prep (TX) at the Chipotle Nationals isn’t exactly how Montverde Academy expected to conclude their 2024-25 season as Kevin Boyle made his exit for SPIRE Academy in Ohio. Though the team saw the graduation of a few key players, the Eagles under first-year head coach Steve Turner have a loaded roster, which includes four-star power forwards Lincoln Cosby, Joe Philon and Gibbs transfer Oneal Delancy, who should slide into the point guard role for Montverde Academy this fall. Expectations to compete for a national championship continue under Turner, who brings over plenty of experience from his time coaching at Gonzaga (D.C.).
2. Columbus (Fla.)
Life after the Boozer brothers begin for the Explorers, but don’t think for one minute that this high-level basketball program is going to take a dip whatsoever. Columbus is coming off winning a fourth straight Class 7A state championship and though the team will look a little different, expectations remain high regardless for the Explorers. Leading the team this season will be a pair of senior four-star small forwards in Caleb Gaskins and Jaxon Richardson, son of former NBA star Jason Richardson. The Explorers will also be moving forward under a new head coach as Andrew Moran left the program earlier this year to join the University of Miami as an assistant.
3. Dynamic Prep (TX)
Dynamic Prep are led by former NBA star forward Jermaine O’Neal and are set to join Overtime Elite, one of the premier destinations for top prep basketball programs and top prospects. The team is loaded once again and features several of the country’s top players in 2027 four-star small forward Marcus Spears Jr. and 2026 four-star shooting guard Dakari Spear, who this past summer with Drive Nation on the EYBL Circuit, averaged 13.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Now playing in the elite circuit of Overtime Elite, Dynamic Prep will be tested regularly as they remain one of the country’s top prep programs around.
4. Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.)
The Crusaders are always in the running nationally when it comes to top boys basketball programs on the prep level and this fall is no different. Long Island Lutheran is coming off a 22-7 campaign and have a bevy of talent up and down the roster, including 2026 five-star point guard Dylan Mingo. Mingo is ranked as the No. 5 overall player in the Rivals Industry Rankings and also the top point guard and player out of the Empire State. Among the other notable stars on the team for the Crusaders are four-star talents Moussa Kamissoko and Kayden Allen. With players like Mingo, Kamissoko and Allen, expect Long Island Lutheran to be in competition at the end in the Chipotle Nationals.

5. Gonzaga (D.C.)
Though Steve Turner is no longer leading the program, don’t expect Gonzaga to be falling off too far from the national pedestal they’re on annually. The Eagles went 28-6 last season and defeated Sidwell Friends, 67-51, for the DCSAA Class AA state championship last fall. One of the team’s top talents from a season ago in Saxton Simley transferred to Mount Saint Joseph this off-season. Gonzaga will lean on the talents of 6-foot-6 dual-sport star Carter Meadows, who is already committed to Michigan for football as a five-star EDGE.
