West Virginia high school football may not be as heralded as its counterparts in Texas or Florida but the sport still boasts a passionate following in the Mountain State. From powerhouse programs with longstanding traditions to rising squads looking to make their mark, here are the top 25 teams heading into the 2025 West Virginia high school football season, according to Massey.

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. Martinsburg Bulldogs

The Bulldogs became two-time defending state champions after defeating Spring Mills in the 2024 West Virginia high school football Class AAAA title game. That victory extends their winning streak to 27 games dating back to the start of the 2023 season. Martinsburg is targeting another undefeated championship run as they begin their 2025 season against New Jersey’s Camden on August 29.

2. Bridgeport Indians

The Indians completed an undefeated season by dominating Herbert Hoover in the Class AAA state championship game. No team threatened Bridgeport during their 14-0 campaign, as proven by their ten victories of surrendering eight points or less and their average victory margin of 49.2 points. Defending their crown will be Bridgeport’s primary goal for 2025, and their season starts against Buckhannon-Upshur on August 29.

3. Huntington Highlanders

After splitting their first two games, the Highlanders embarked on a ten-game winning streak before losing by one point to Martinsburg in the Class AAAA state semifinals. That defeat marks the second consecutive year in which the Bulldogs ended their season. Huntington will be in the hunt for the state championship in the 2025 West Virginia high school football season. Wide receiver Deuce Olden II and the Islanders begin their campaign against Tennessee’s Oakland on August 29.

4. Spring Mills Cardinals

While the Cardinals finished the 2024 season with an impressive 11-2 record, they failed to figure out Martinsburg. Both Spring Mills’s losses were against the Bulldogs, including their defeat in the Class AAAA state championship game. Cincinnati commit Xavier Anderson and the Cardinals get another chance to chase the title in 2025, which they will start on August 30 against Wheeling Park.

5. Hurricane Redskins

The Redskins started the 2024 West Virginia high school football Class AAAA state playoffs with victories against George Washington and Jefferson. However, Spring Mills eliminated them in the state semifinals, ending their season at 9-4. Hurricane’s 2025 season begins with a rematch against the Patriots on September 5.
