West Virginia High School Football Top 25 Rankings - Sep. 1

Take me home to the country roads and also to where you can find the first set of West Virginia high school football rankings after Week 1 play. To say there’s some shakeup would be an understatement.
For the first time in quite awhile, the Martinsburg Bulldogs are not the state’s No. 1 ranked team after their 28-0 loss to Camden (N.J.) at home. Bridgeport debuts at the top spot, but who else is featured amongst the Top 25?
Here are the top 25 teams heading into Week 2 of the 2025 West Virginia high school football season, according to Massey.
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
1. Bridgeport Indians (1-0)
The Indians are coming off an undefeated 2024 season by dominating Herbert Hoover in the Class AAA state championship game. Buckhannon-Upshur was of no challenge in Week 1 as Bridgeport cruised to a 63-14 rout and now sit atop of the West Virginia rankings as the top team in the state. It’s going to be hard to unseat the Indians as they have a favorable rest of the regular season slate ahead of them and could run the table at 14-0 for the second straight year.
2. Martinsburg Bulldogs (0-1)
The Bulldogs have a rich history when it comes to winning state championships and after winning a second straight last year, looked to test their mettle against New Jersey’s Camden last week. For the first time in quite awhile, the Bulldogs looked outmanned and outmatched versus the Panthers as Martinsburg fell in a 28-0 decision at home. It’s unusual to see the Bulldogs losing to anyone, especially by four touchdowns and things don’t get too much easier when they face Huntington this week.

3. Spring Mills Cardinals (1-0)
The Cardinals finished the 2024 season with an impressive 11-2 record, but they have yet to figure out Martinsburg. With the Bulldogs dropping their first game, this could open the window for Spring Mills in Class AAAA as they look to make a return to the state championship game. Armed with Cincinnati commitment Xavier Anderson, the Cardinals opened up the season with a gritty 14-0 victory over a tough Jefferson squad.
4. Huntington Highlanders (0-1)
Huntington was another West Virginia team that ended up losing their opener against an out-of-state opponent, falling to Kentucky’s Paul G. Blazer, 35-21. Now the Highlanders gear up to face a Martinsburg team this week that they lost to last year by a point the Class AAAA state semifinals. If Huntington is able to pull off a win over Martinsburg, they would send the Bulldogs to their first 0-2 start since 2015. The Highlanders would be putting themselves firmly at the top of AAAA if they are able to pull off the feat this Friday.
5. Wheeling Park Patriots (1-0)
The Patriots started off the 2025 West Virginia high school football season with an impressive 23-7 victory over Parkersburg South behind a strong rushing performance from senior Brennan Waco. The tailback carried the rock 33 times for 248 yards and scored three touchdowns in the victory. Up next for Wheeling Park, they’ll face No. 3 ranked Spring Mills in a showdown of state powers.
