The scenario is Bay Port was trailing Arrowhead 18-15 with one second remaining in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division I state championship at the 11-yard line going in.

Needing just a field goal to tie the game and send the state title tilt into overtime, Pirates head coach Steve Jorgensen decided to go against the grain and go for the win. Problem was Bay Port’s play they had liked for the game-winning touchdown didn’t go quite according to plan.

Jorgensen’s gamble didn’t pay off as the final play of the game, quarterback Mikey Jones‘ pass sailed wide of his intended target, ending the contest and Arrowhead would be crowned as Wisconsin WIAA Division I champions. For Jorgensen and the Bay Port coaches and player, they can only be left to wonder what might’ve been if they had opted to tie the game and head into extra time.

“Yeah, we had a play we liked,” Jorgensen said to reporters after the game about going for the win rather than the tie. “We wanted to go for it. We wanted to go win the game right there and it came down to one play, ten yards for the state championship. Tip your cap to (Arrowhead), they made a great play. I’ll think about that decision for a long time.”

The only two losses Bay Port had on the season came against No. 2 ranked West De Pere and Kimberly during the Wisconsin high school football regular season before Friday night’s heartbreaking defeat to Arrowhead.
