4-star OL Jared Smith commits to Rutgers: 'I feel like I belong there'

Stockbridge (Ga.) Woodland offensive lineman Jared Smith has committed to Rutgers.
The four-star chose the Scarlet Knights over Auburn, Georgia and Georgia Tech and it came down to where he felt the most wanted.
“Rutgers offered me when I was there for a game early in the season last year and that has been on me hard since,” Smith told On3. “I was back at Rutgers for a Junior Day earlier this year and that is when I started thinking about the commitment. I left that visit knowing Rutgers was likely the school for me.
“They made me a priority from the beginning. The coaches put a lot of effort into recruiting me, they never pressured me to commit, but they stayed consistent. That showed me how important I was to them. Our relationship built slowly over time and that made a difference.”

The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder has visited Rutgers around half a dozen times. He returned this spring and he will be back for an official visit on May 30. That will be the only official visit Smith takes.
“My recruitment is shut down. I have canceled my other official visits and Rutgers is where I want to be. They treat me like I am a Six-star when I am up there. I always feel the love up there and I feel like I belong there.
“I love coach Schiano’s plan for the program and where he has it going. Their plan for me is great too. Rutgers has great academics and academic support, so that was a big reason as well. I just love the overall environment up there.”
